This study analyzed the social impact of fake news following 9 terror attacks in Southeast Asia between 2015-2019. It identified 4 main types of social impact: eroding trust in authorities, engaging in identity politics, creating false alarms about public safety, and inciting fear and unrest. The most common impact was inciting fear and unrest, which occurred in 7 of the 9 attacks. The study aims to help authorities better address the various social impacts of fake news after terror incidents to prevent rumors from spreading and undermining crisis communication efforts.

Fake news and hate speech are not new to Nigerian democracy. However, since the internet revolution in recent decades, 2015 is seen as the year Nigeria finally woke up to the threat of fake news and hate speech fueled by internet technologies that are subtly used to undermine democracy. Since then, whenever national, state or local council elections approach, Nigeria experiences tense and difficult times – conflicts, media propaganda, hate comments and false information – circumstances that are inimical to the nation’s democracy. Despite fake news and hate have become global concepts, peculiarities of nations and cultures democracies imply that context-based tools will be more suitable to provide evidence-based data on their impact on democracies. Terrorism is considered a historical and major problem for the U.S. Since 2001, the significance of the problem has increased. Therefore, several organizations and facilities collect and store terrorism data for events like attempted and occurred activities. The main data source for terrorism activities is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The mandate of this arm of government is to protect Americans both in locally and internationally against crime activities but terrorism seems the greatest enemy of American citizen wherever they are in the world.
Numerous and most useful data for terrorism is found from the following federal agency and private databases:
· The National Security Agency (NSA)
· Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
· National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Response to Terrorism (NCSTRT) and
· Global Terrorism Database (GTD). (FBI, 2014; GTD, 2014)
Information from the above databases are analyzed to present diverse quantitative and qualitative terrorism data that cover several years including life threats to the U.S. soil. According to these databases, terrorism is an old problem and continues to intensify due to availability of uninterrupted new technology as well as growing financial power of their organizations. The Federal Agencies data bases provide information on terrorism activities and information on several strategies that have been used in the past and are currently used to curb the vice (FBI, 2014).
The other terrorist’s data sources are the media agencies. News agencies such as online newspapers and broadcasting corporations provide terrorism data as it occurs. Although these agencies might not provide analyzed data, their role is to increase public awareness about terrorism occurrences and development.

victims are, the psychological effects of cyber threats can rival those of traditional terrorism.

Cyber aggression has become a daily fact of life in the
21st century, yet for most people it’s still only a reality
in the form of cyber crime – hackers targeting financial
information or other personal details. Politically moti-
vated attacks might threaten them as well, but they
tend to be the concern of governments and corpora-
tions rather than ordinary citizens. The thought of a
terrorist shooting in a mall or bombing in an airport
probably seems far more frightening to the average
person than Russian hackers disrupting government
networks in Estonia or Anonymous breaking into the
police department of Ferguson, Missouri. Cyber terror-
ists, after all, have yet to actually kill or injure anyone.
Yet our research has found this perception of cyber
aggression might not be entirely accurate. The aim of
terrorism, after all, is not just physical destruction, and
depending on who the attackers and the victims are,
the psychological effects of cyber terrorism can be just
as powerful as the real thing.
Defining cyber terrorism
People face cyber aggression on an almost daily basis.
Hackers appropriate, erase, or ransom data, defraud
bank customers, steal identities, or plant malevolent
viruses. In many cases, hackers are criminals out for
pecuniary gain. But sometimes their motives are poli-
tical. Some are “hacktivists,” or cyber activist groups,
like Anonymous, others are terror groups like Hamas
or Islamic State, and still others are agents of national
states like Iran, North Korea, or Russia. They are not
usually after money but pursue a political agenda to
foment for social change, gain political concessions, or
cripple an enemy. Sometimes their means are peaceful,

Cyber aggression has become a daily fact of life in the
21st century, yet for most people it’s still only a reality
in the form of cyber crime – hackers targeting financial
information or other personal details. Politically moti-
vated attacks might threaten them as well, but they
tend to be the concern of governments and corpora-
tions rather than ordinary citizens. The thought of a
terrorist shooting in a mall or bombing in an airport
probably seems far more frightening to the average
person than Russian hackers disrupting government
networks in Estonia or Anonymous breaking into the
police department of Ferguson, Missouri. Cyber terror-
ists, after all, have yet to actually kill or injure anyone.
Yet our research has found this perception of cyber
aggression might not be entirely accurate. The aim of
terrorism, after all, is not just physical destruction, and
depending on who the attackers and the victims are,
the psychological effects of cyber terrorism can be just
as powerful as the real thing.
Defining cyber terrorism
People face cyber aggression on an almost daily basis.
Hackers appropriate, erase, or ransom data, defraud
bank customers, steal identities, or plant malevolent
viruses. In many cases, hackers are criminals out for
pecuniary gain. But sometimes their motives are poli-
tical. Some are “hacktivists,” or cyber activist groups,
like Anonymous, others are terror groups like Hamas
or Islamic State, and still others are agents of national
states like Iran, North Korea, or Russia. They are not
usually after money but pursue a political agenda to
foment for social change, gain political concessions, or
cripple an enemy. Sometimes their means are peaceful,
but other times they are vicious and violent. The lines
often blur. Anonymous will hack the Ferguson police
department just as it will initiate an “electronic
Holocaust” against Israel in support of the Palestinian
cause (Rogers 2014). Islamic activists will use the
Internet not only to recruit members and raise funds
for social welfare projects but also to steal money for
terrorist activities or disseminate information to stoke
fear and demoralize a civilian population. States will
pursue online espionage but also wreak havoc by crash-
ing multiple systems – as did the Russians, allegedly, in
Estonia in 2007, with mass denial-of-service attacks on
gove ...

Cases of anarchists repressed for anti-war activities are presented, as well as strategies of support for political prisoners, and modest successes in supporting their struggles.
