Acts 4:5-12 ~ The Warning Shot (Pt. 1)Laura Zielke
This week we began discussing the actual "trial" (or "examination") of Peter and John. We looked at how Jesus had prepared them for such a time as this by telling them,
Whenever they bring you before synagogues and rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how you should defend yourselves or what you should say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said.” Luke 12:11-12
Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit, and as he spoke in defense of the good deed done to the formerly lame man, he turned all attention away from himself and towards the real power behind the miracle. We looked at how Peter was able to use a Greek word that had more than one meaning to move from a position of defense to one of offense in the name of Jesus. (We also had a brief discussion regarding the possibility of the religious leadership being so close to Jesus and His ministry, and yet so far from understanding who He was and His purpose.)
This document provides a list of references on women's leadership skills and strengthening the legacy of Rotary. The references cover topics like presence, change leadership, learning to lead, grit, options for facing adversity, and becoming a deliberately developmental organization. Major authors cited include Amy Cuddy, Robert Kegan, John Kotter, Malcolm Gladwell, and Michelle Obama. The references suggest leadership skills can be learned from studying successful people and approaches.
This document provides a curriculum vitae for Jaime Clark-Soles, an Associate Professor of New Testament at Perkins School of Theology. Her research focuses on the Gospel of John and she has authored several books and articles on New Testament studies.
This week we slowed our pace to analyze the development of early beliefs about Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy about a coming Messiah. We looked at the variety of "primitive" terms Peter used to describe Jesus as he tailored his message to such a faithful, Jewish audience.
We discovered that although Peter's Colonnade speech was structured as a "forensic judicial speech," it was very similar to the flow of his Pentecost sermon. Because of this, we were able to compare and contrast the calls to repentance (2:38 & 3:19). It is interesting to see the variation in terms amidst the consistency of the overall message. Peter's ultimate goal was redemption for his fellow Jews who had—in complete ignorance—killed the prophesied Messiah.

In this lesson we will see how God launched the World Christian movement. We will discover that the Church is a double structure that endures to this day. We will watch how ordinary people chose a strategy of suffering which they learned from Jesus and will consider how we can live with that same apostolic passion. "In His Name" ~ This week we dove a little deeper into Peter's second sermon going verse-by-verse through Acts 3:11-16. The scene took place in Solomon's Colonnade. As the healed man held onto Peter and John, the crowd rushed over in amazement to better understand what they were witnessing. Peter took advantage of the opportunity to speak to a "captive audience," and began by clarifying the source of the healing: faith in the Name of Jesus who was glorified by God the Father.

Letter & Spirit, Volume 3: The Hermeneutic of Continuity Christ, Kingdom, and...JasterRogueII
This document provides an introduction to the journal Letter & Spirit. It summarizes the contributors to the issue and their areas of expertise. The introduction explains that the term "hermeneutic of continuity" originated from discussions at a 1985 Synod of Bishops regarding the interpretation of Vatican II, where bishops affirmed that the Council stands in continuity with previous Church tradition and teachings, rather than marking a sharp break. It provides background on the term before introducing the various articles in the issue on topics related to scripture, theology, and tradition.
This week we went back to analyze the Old Testament prophecy that Peter quoted (and adapted) during his and John's first interrogation by the Sanhedrin. We observed that different translations render the verse with slight differences in two of the words: "rejected" and "cornerstone." We made a list on the board (see below) to compare, and then looked at how Acts 4:11 compares to Psalm 118:22—highlighting one very significant difference.
We also questioned how the Sanhedrin would have understood "salvation" as Peter presented it, and then examined our own approach to presenting salvation today.
his week we finished our study of the second chapter of Acts (phew!) by examining the summary paragraph which Luke wrote to separate the events on Pentecost from the healing of the lame man at the Temple. We see a sketch of what daily life was like in this nascent community as they shared their belongings, ate at each others' homes, observed the Lord's Supper together, and devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and prayer. Luke makes a point to show how Christianity was birthed out of Judaism with his reference to their daily visits to the Temple (which is the backdrop for the next chapter).

A critical discussion of the use of film in participatory research projects w...Katie Robinson
This document discusses two participatory research projects that used film to share the stories of homeless young people. The first project in Manchester, England involved collaborating with a charity for homeless young men to create a film documenting their experiences. The second project in Ottawa, Canada explored civic issues facing homeless youth through participatory video research. Both projects grappled with how to communicate participants' complex lived experiences to different audiences in a way that countered stigmatizing narratives while avoiding potential harms from exposure. The authors analyze tensions around which audiences the films prioritized and how that shaped the stories using concepts of symbolic violence and narrative frameworks.
The study tested Roseman's (2011) appraisal theory of emotions by manipulating the appraisals of agency (self, other, circumstances) and problem type (instrumental, intrinsic) in vignettes. Participants read one vignette and rated emotions, appraisals, and compared emotions. 1. The document discusses the problem of induction that was raised by David Hume. Hume argued that induction cannot be justified because it is impossible to prove that nature is uniform and the future will resemble the past.
2. Bertrand Russell proposed the principle of induction as a way to overcome this problem. He argued that past experiences increase the probability that a pattern will continue in the future, though it cannot be proven.
3. The author expands on Russell's ideas, arguing that since the future becomes the past, we can experience future futures becoming past futures, justifying the assumption that they will be uniform based on observable natural laws like gravity. This allows induction to be justified for experiences within the realm of observable
