Powell Gardens is a living museum and botanical garden in Kansas City with over 970 acres of plant collections including native prairie, woodlands, wetlands, and succession areas. The horticulture staff curates the collections which are recorded in a plant database containing over 20,000 accession records. This database is used for long-term planning and reference. Staff and volunteers painstakingly record data on plant origins, numbers received, and planting locations. Powell Gardens is working to document all wild plant species on its grounds and join the Botanical Garden Conservation International to help protect endangered plants. The summary highlights the size and diversity of Powell Gardens' plant collections which serve as a living museum.
