Come and see what it's like to fast during Ramadan!

2. In the Islamic
month of
Ramadan,
Muslims fast.

3. Fasting means to
not eat or drink
from a little
before the sun
rises in the
morning…

sets in the
evening…

What’s it like to
fast for
Ramadan?

Come with me
and see!

Brnngggg!
goes the alarm clock.
My mother sets it extra
early so that we can get
up to eat suhoor.

8. Suhoor is the meal we eat
early in the morning
before our fast (sawm)

9. Since I’m a little older this
year,
I’m going to help make
suhoor, in shaa Allah.

10. What do
we eat for
suhoor?

11. Some days we eat
egg sandwiches…..

12. Some days it’s a nice,
hot bowl of oatmeal….

Some days we eat ful
beans….

14. and on the days
we wake up
a little late ….

15. It might be leftovers….

16. After suhoor is started,
I go and wake up
the rest of the fasters….

17. We serve and eat suhoor.
Everyone eats and
keeps an eye
on the clock….

18. Sometimes we have
lots of time until the
adhaan (ah-than)
(the call to prayer)….

19. And sometimes we finish
just in the nick of time……

20. That’s the adhaan for
Salaatul Fajr (the morning prayer)

21. Now we must stop all eating
and drinking until…

22. maghrib (sunset)

Next, we pray
Salaatul Fajr

24. What’s next?

25. Well, it
depends….

26. Sometimes we
go back to
sleep for a
while….

27. Sometimes we stay up
and read or recite
Quraan..

28. A little later we often hold a Ramadan
family meeting to discuss the schedule for
the day and remind ourselves how we can
do good deeds throughout the day.

29. After that, we may do Islamic
Studies and maybe some school
work….

30. Then the afternoon
rolls around.

31. We pray Saalatul Dhuhr
(the “noon” prayer)

32. We make lunch for the kids who are not
fasting
(or anyone who is sick and not fasting)

33. In the afternoon,
sometimes I am very
hungry…..

34. But some days, I can’t
believe it is almost time
to break my fast…
I’m not hungry at all!

35. We pray the Salaatul Asr (the
late afternoon prayer) and
maybe read more quraan or
learn/review more about
Ramadan, fasting, or Islam.

36. Sometimes we do crafts
or other fun Ramadan
activities.

Then it’s off to the
kitchen to start dinner…

38. About half an hour or so
before maghrib, everyone
rushes around cleaning up

39. Then the time we have been
waiting for is here…….

40. The muadhdhin (moo-ahth-then)
calls the adhaan for
Salaatul Maghrib
(the prayer at sunset) …..

41. Everybody takes a bite of
food and a sip of water…
It is from the
sunnah of
Prophet
Muhammad
(sallAllahu
alayhi wa
sallam)to
break the
fast with
dates and
water

42. And says the duaa
(supplication) for breaking
the fast….

43. Then we pray Salaatul Maghrib

44. and then we sit down at the maidah
(ma-ee-dah, dining sheet) to a
yummy dinner (known as iftar).

45. Finally, after we clean up the
dinner dishes and rest, we pray
Salaatul Ishaa, the last prayer
of the day.

46. And that’s how a day
of fasting usually goes
for my family….
