Southern states that relied on labor-intensive cash crops like cotton seceded from the Union to form the Confederacy. The border states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri had economies based on both free labor and slavery and remained in the Union. The other Union states were located in the North and did not practice slavery.
