developed emergency evacuation plans, and

 Tsunami education and evacuation drills held in
schools in Bali island and Aceh province
 Local government signed MoUs with eight hotels to
serve as evacuation points for the schools in Bali,
marking the beginning from school preparedness to
whole of society preparedness

#90Drills | Strengthening School Preparedness for Tsunamis in 18 Asia-Pacific Countries

  • 2.  COLLECT AND ANALYSE exposure data to identify tsunami high risk schools  REVIEW, UPDATE, TRANSLATE and DISSEMINATE education materials on tsunami response and preparedness for schools  REVIEW, DESIGN and CONDUCT tsunami evacuation drills in schools  DEVELOP VISUAL PRODUCTS (videos, blogs, photo stories) recording tsunami school drills  SUPPORT HIGH LEVEL EVENTS around World Tsunami Awareness Day through robust communications and outreach  DEVELOP REGIONAL GUIDELINES for replicating and scaling up tsunami evacuation drills Project Purpose #90Drills Reduce the loss of lives of school children in high tsunami risk areas through better awareness and preparedness.

  • 5.  7,787 PARTICIPANTS - students, teachers and members of school administration have participated in the drills  20 SCHOOLS have organized tsunami education, developed emergency evacuation plans, and conducted drills  7 COUNTRIES have actively engaged in the implementation of the regional project Results #90Drills
  • 6.  Tsunami education and evacuation drills held in schools in Bali island and Aceh province  Local government signed MoUs with eight hotels to serve as evacuation points for the schools in Bali, marking the beginning from school preparedness to whole of society preparedness Indonesia #90Drills 6 SCHOOLS 2,621 PARTICIPANTS
  • 7.  Tsunami awareness messages promoted through an education-entertainment campaign  Activities included a public folk games event, singing and drawing competitions, rock concert, and bike parade  Celebrity ambassador Ms Nguyen Thuy Van, hugely popular TV host Viet Nam #90Drills 2 SCHOOLS 2,479 PARTICIPANTS
  • 8.  One school, one island, one community  First ever tsunami evacuation drill in the country  School emergency evacuation plans available since 2004 but never tested out Maldives #90Drills 1 SCHOOL 605 PARTICIPANTS
  • 9.  First large scale tsunami evacuation drills held simultaneously in six schools to mark IDDR day  DMO initiates a safety drill in schools damaged in the 2007 tsunami on WTAD 2017  Virtual reality headsets are used to prepare children for the drills Samoa #90Drills 7 SCHOOLS 1,300 PARTICIPANTS
  • 10.  Strong local partnership to collect data, conduct a tsunami risk assessment, develop tsunami hazard maps  Construction of new evacuation routes and safe areas Solomon Islands #90Drills 2 SCHOOLS 400 PARTICIPANTS
  • 11.  First ever tsunami drill  Strong support from the Government of Tonga  New evacuation road built for the drill  Observed by students of two other high schools, who will have their school drills in the future Tonga #90Drills 1 SCHOOL 300 PARTICIPANTS
  • 12.  First ever tsunami drill to commemorate World Tsunami Awareness Day  The drill was combined with the cleaning of the shoreline near the school to highlight the importance of the environment in preparing for disasters Pakistan #90Drills 1 SCHOOL 129 PARTICIPANTS
