This document contains a summary of key concepts from an 8th grade science textbook organized by topic. The topics covered include matter, atoms and the periodic table, chemical bonds, chemical reactions, acids and bases, energy, thermal energy, motion, forces, magnetism, electricity, sound, and light. For each topic, there is a brief 1-2 sentence definition or description of the science concept and it is related to a Bible verse.

2. Matter
● For in him all things were
created: things in heaven
and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or
powers or rulers or
authorities; all things have
been created through him
and for him.
Colossians 1:16
● All things visible and invisible
are matter and were created
through God.
● Has mass and takes
up space.
● 3 different states –
solid, liquid, and gas.
● Everything is matter.
● Measured by the
International System
of Units.

3. Atoms & The Periodic Table
● For I know the plans I have
for you,” declares the Lord,
“plans to prosper you and not
to harm you, plans to give
you hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11
● God has plans for all of us.
● Atoms are made of smaller
particles – a nucleus,
electrons, and protons.
● Atoms have an atomic
number – the number of
protons in its nucleus.
● Atomic mass unit –
measures the particles in an
atom.
● Periodic table – made up of
elements in a pattern.

4. Chemical Bonds
● Though one may be
overpowered, two can
defend themselves. A cord
of three strands is not
quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:12
● Chemical bonds can't be
easily broken and neither
can the bond between
two people.
● Two types of chemical
bonds – ionic and
covalent.
● Ionic bond – attraction
between two oppositely
charged ions.
● Covalent bond –
chemical bond formed
when two atoms share
electrons.

5. Chemical Reactions
● Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday and
today and forever.
Hebrews 13:8
● Jesus stays the same
always, but worldly
objects do not.
● There are several
observable characteristics
of chemical reactions – the
production of new
materials and a change in
energy.
● When chemical bonds
break down or new bonds
form a chemical reaction
occurs.

6. Acids & Bases
● Dear friends, do not believe every
spirit, but test the spirits to see whether
they are from God, because many false
prophets have gone out into the world.
This is how you can recognize the
Spirit of God: Every spirit that
acknowledges that Jesus Christ has
come in the flesh is from God, but
every spirit that does not acknowledge
Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit
of the antichrist, which you have heard
is coming and even now is already in
the world
1 John 4:1-3
● We can know if something is from God
by testing it.
● Acids – substance that
taste sour, reacts with
metals and carbinates, and
turns blue litmus paper
red.
● Bases – substance that
tastes bitter, feels slippery,
and turns red litmus paper
blue.
● pH Scale – expresses the
concentration of hydrogen
ions in a solution.

7. Energy
● For we are God’s
handiwork, created in
Christ Jesus to do good
works, which God
prepared in advance for us
to do.
Ephesians 2:10
● We are created in God to
do work and energy is the
ability to do work.
● Energy – the ability to do work or cause
change.
● There are 6 major forms of energy –
mechanical, thermal, chemical, electrical,
electromagnetic, and nuclear.
● Mechanical – associated with motion or
position.
● Thermal – total energy of particles in a
substance or material
● Chemical – potential energy stored in
chemical bonds.
● Electrical – moving electric charges that
produce electricity.
● Electromagnetic – travels in waves.
● Nuclear – stored in nucleus of an atom
and release during nuclear reactions.

8. Thermal Energy
● I know your deeds,
that you are neither
cold nor hot. I wish
you were either one
or the other!
Revelations 3:15
● We either have to be
passionate for God or
don't care, but not in
between the two.
● Thermal energy –
total energy of all the
particles of matter.
● Does not depend just
on the temperature, it
also depends on the
arrangement of the
particles.

9. Motion
● ‘For in him we live and move
and have our being.’ As
some of your own poets have
said, ‘We are his offspring.’
Acts 17:28
● God gave us life and the
ability to move so we can use
it to worship Him.
● An object is in motion
when its distance
from another object
has changed.
● An object is in motion
if it changes position
relative to a reference
point.

10. Forces
● Since you died with Christ
to the elemental spiritual
forces of this world, why,
as though you still
belonged to the world, do
you submit to its rules:
Colossians 2:20
● God is the force driving us
to do good in the world.
● Force – a push or
pull.
● Unbalanced force –
can cause an object
to start moving, stop
moving, or change
direction.
● Balanced forces –
equal forces acting on
one object in opposite
directions.

11. Magnetism
● Let us draw near to God with
a sincere heart and with the
full assurance that faith
brings, having our hearts
sprinkled to cleanse us from
a guilty conscience and
having our bodies washed
with pure water.
Hebrews 10:22
● We are like magnets with
God because we draw near
to Him.
● Magnetism – the attraction
of a magnet for another
object.
● Every magnet has two
ends, each called a
magnetic pole.
● Magnetic poles that repel
each other that are alike.
● Magnetic poles that attract
each other are unlike.

12. Electricity
● He gives strength to
the weary and
increases the power
of the weak.
Isaiah 40:29
● God gives us power.
● Electric current – the
flow of charge
through a material.
● Electric currents
produce magnetic
fields.
● Electric circuit – a
complete path
through which electric
charges can flow.

13. Sound
● Praise our God, all
peoples, let the sound
of his praise be
heard;
Psalms 66:8
● God can hear our
praises.
● Sound – a disturbance
that travels through a
medium as a longitudinal
wave.
● Loudness describes
what you actually hear.
● Speed of sound –
depends on the elacticity,
density, and temp of the
medium.

14. Light
● I have come into the
world as a light, so
that no one who
believes in me should
stay in darkness.
John 12:46
● Jesus is our light and
guides us through
dark times.
● Light can be reflected,
absorbed, or transmitted
when it strikes an object.
● Opaque – a material that
reflects or absorbs all of
the light that strikes it.
● Transparent – material that
transports light.
● Translucent – materials
scatter light as it passes
through.
