Under various temperatures and reaction times, different chain length glycols were investigated for their ability to convert ferromagnetic face-centered cubic (fcc) nickel nanoparticles into antiferromagnetic hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal structure. Longer glycol molecules with both ether fragments and linear chains were found to be more efficient phase tuners. The conversion process was very slow, allowing controlled preparation of nickel particles with tunable fcc/hcp phase ratios by selecting appropriate temperature and time values. This process provides a simple way to modify nickel particle properties like magnetism and sintering behavior.
