LEARNER MOTIVATION EXPLAINED
HOW TO USE AN LMS TO MOTIVATE YOUR LEARNERS TO UPSKILL
That’s me, Allen Partridge. I’m an educator, a game & simulation developer, and a learning
addict. I live in Oregon, and love to hike in the mountains that surround my home at the
southern edge of the Williamette Valley.

training content for my learners.
They don’t ever use it. I think
they must just be lazy.

You mean those irritating annual torture
sessions, where I ignore the reading and
guess the questions until I get it right?
You do know that I have an actual job
to do here, right?
We hear learners asking …
• Why should I prioritize this?

• Will this impact my annual review?
• Will this help me do my job better?
• Will this enhance my career?
• Is this more important than other tasks?
• Who will know that I’ve done this?

So what can I do to aid intrinsic motivation?
• Autonomy
• Desire to be self-directed
• Mastery
• Urge to get better at things
• Think about playing a game
• Why do you want to level up?
• Why do you improve your skills?
• Purpose
• Desire to make a contribution
Interesting application by Steve Smith
In an article for HR Zone, Steve Smith extends this
paradigm to Maslow’s Hierarchy
Notably, the motivators that Smith Identifies, align
with those that Pink identifies related to intrinsic
motivation.
The sense of belonging, confidence in self and
desire for self actualization (purpose) are huge
intrinsic motivations

sure to add some kind of content.

in the ‘Module Library’
• You can click on the link to revisit
the module, update it, or to
change the way it’s scored

• Give it a name, etc.
• Click ‘Add Modules’ under the

  • 1. LEARNER MOTIVATION EXPLAINED HOW TO USE AN LMS TO MOTIVATE YOUR LEARNERS TO UPSKILL
  • 2. That’s me, Allen Partridge. I’m an educator, a game & simulation developer, and a learning addict. I live in Oregon, and love to hike in the mountains that surround my home at the southern edge of the Williamette Valley.
  • 3. Our Perspective… I bought this huge library of training content for my learners. They don’t ever use it. I think they must just be lazy.
  • 4. Their Perspective… Like I need 400 Lessons on how to use PowerPoint You mean those irritating annual torture sessions, where I ignore the reading and guess the questions until I get it right? You do know that I have an actual job to do here, right?
  • 5. We hear learners asking … • Why should I prioritize this? • Is this a waste of my time? • How will this benefit me? • Will this impact my annual review? • Will this help me do my job better? • Will this enhance my career? • Is this more important than other tasks? • Who will know that I’ve done this?
  • 6. We all have choices What motivates you to do one thing versus another? What kinds of things de-motivate you?
  • 7. Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Motivators External Internal Positive Negative The only option to create long term sustainable motivation is this one. To learn more about what motivates 21st Century employees, have a look at Daniel Pink’s inspiring Ted Talk about motivation.
  • 8. So what can I do to aid intrinsic motivation? • Autonomy • Desire to be self-directed • Mastery • Urge to get better at things • Think about playing a game • Why do you want to level up? • Why do you improve your skills? • Purpose • Desire to make a contribution
  • 9. Interesting application by Steve Smith In an article for HR Zone, Steve Smith extends this paradigm to Maslow’s Hierarchy Notably, the motivators that Smith Identifies, align with those that Pink identifies related to intrinsic motivation. Remove barriers to success Ease of Use & Mobile Access Clear communication of expectations & purpose Less stick, more carrot Provide options Enable self-selection of skill based course content Provide abundant options – relevant to various needs Provide multiple course delivery options Give appropriate timelines Provide opportunities for belonging Through participation Through gamification Through feedback Provide opportunities to shine Celebrate Mastery Acknowledge Positive Progress Purpose Mastery Autonomy
