David Flint:         A Great Day Helping


       Last Thursday we went to the small city of Lota. We were all
very excited and had likely an idea of what it would be like. The first
thing I noticed was how the city that used to be technologically
advanced during the coal mining days, is now extremely humble.
The reason we went to Lota was mainly to go to a nursery school.
At the school, we did a series of activities to try to educate the
children in English with basic and fun lessons, such as plays and
songs that had simple vocabulary.
When we arrived in Lota, we went to the nursery school that
suffered damage in the recent earthquake. We also saw that the
“Mediaaguas” that were made to replace the nursery school. Due
to the lack of space, we were forced to transfer the activities to
“Baldomero Lillo” school, which has the same name as the
nursery school. We each got a “little brother” to whom we had to
give a small gift and talk. During the activities, we had a very
attentive audience. They were between 8 months and 5 years old.
The girl I got as a “little sister” was 4 years old and was called
Francesca. She seemed very happy with her gift and wouldn’t let
go of it. Everybody had a very humble social background and it was
nice to help people in these conditions. They were very enthusiastic
when we performed.
     In my opinion, what turned out the best were the songs
created by level C, because you could hear them very well. We
need to improve amplification because you couldn’t hear much of
the plays. As a group, our weak points were the lack of props and
costumes to make the act more understandable. In my opinion, this
experience was an overall successes because we reached our
goal of sharing with the children. If we were to do this again, I think
we should prepare our activities a little more. This was a very
gratifying experience. It made me very proud to be able to help
these families.

The Wonderful Nursery School:



       Last Thursday our generation went to a nursey school,
“Baldomero Lillo,” to spend some time with a child that we had to
entertain. This happened in Lota, a city from VIII region. We didn’t
stay in Lota because of the damage of the earthquake, but the time
we were there was enough to establish a bond. We got to the
nursery school at 4 p.m. and we were given about 2 hours to be
with the child.
When our generation got there, we were presented with a song
and a video about their school after the earthquake. It was very
nice and emotive because the school is now working in two small
wooden houses (mediaaguas).          The audience was from 8 to 4
years old children. They were in a humble situation because of the
earthquake. They were very happy, especially with the presentation
some classmates did: nursery rhymes and plays. I think that the
best was the face of those children when they saw us because our
school goes every year to that nursery school. What needs
improvement is the act we had to perform because it needs more
dedication. Our weak point was the organization as a team, and the
strong point was the constant rehearsals we made. I contributed as
a member as I made them work on and prepare the play.
I put dedication and time to learn well my lines. The performance of
plays needs to be changed and improved because we were
disorganized and not sufficiently prepared.

  • 1. 7th Grade: SOCIAL WORK JOURNAL WRITING Learning Journals: David Flint: A Great Day Helping Last Thursday we went to the small city of Lota. We were all very excited and had likely an idea of what it would be like. The first thing I noticed was how the city that used to be technologically advanced during the coal mining days, is now extremely humble. The reason we went to Lota was mainly to go to a nursery school. At the school, we did a series of activities to try to educate the children in English with basic and fun lessons, such as plays and songs that had simple vocabulary. When we arrived in Lota, we went to the nursery school that suffered damage in the recent earthquake. We also saw that the “Mediaaguas” that were made to replace the nursery school. Due to the lack of space, we were forced to transfer the activities to “Baldomero Lillo” school, which has the same name as the nursery school. We each got a “little brother” to whom we had to give a small gift and talk. During the activities, we had a very attentive audience. They were between 8 months and 5 years old. The girl I got as a “little sister” was 4 years old and was called Francesca. She seemed very happy with her gift and wouldn’t let go of it. Everybody had a very humble social background and it was
  • 2. nice to help people in these conditions. They were very enthusiastic when we performed. In my opinion, what turned out the best were the songs created by level C, because you could hear them very well. We need to improve amplification because you couldn’t hear much of the plays. As a group, our weak points were the lack of props and costumes to make the act more understandable. In my opinion, this experience was an overall successes because we reached our goal of sharing with the children. If we were to do this again, I think we should prepare our activities a little more. This was a very gratifying experience. It made me very proud to be able to help these families.

Ignacio Puig: One Day at Baldomero Lillo The Wonderful Nursery School: Last Thursday our generation went to a nursey school, “Baldomero Lillo,” to spend some time with a child that we had to entertain. This happened in Lota, a city from VIII region. We didn’t stay in Lota because of the damage of the earthquake, but the time we were there was enough to establish a bond. We got to the nursery school at 4 p.m. and we were given about 2 hours to be with the child. When our generation got there, we were presented with a song and a video about their school after the earthquake. It was very nice and emotive because the school is now working in two small wooden houses (mediaaguas). The audience was from 8 to 4 years old children. They were in a humble situation because of the earthquake. They were very happy, especially with the presentation some classmates did: nursery rhymes and plays. I think that the best was the face of those children when they saw us because our school goes every year to that nursery school. What needs improvement is the act we had to perform because it needs more dedication. Our weak point was the organization as a team, and the strong point was the constant rehearsals we made. I contributed as a member as I made them work on and prepare the play. I put dedication and time to learn well my lines. The performance of plays needs to be changed and improved because we were disorganized and not sufficiently prepared.
