The First 90 Days-How to Succeed Starting a New Job in Any Industry
7 Things
1. 7 Things: Co-worker bliss.
You spend more time during the week with your co-workers than you do your significant other, children, or
your dog. That’s why it’s more than just a little important to know the people you spend 40 plus hours a week
with. Rather than believing your co-workers are out to get you because their little quirks are driving you up
the wall, just remember to take a breath and try to work on your issues rather than critiquing theirs. Want to
change your focus from annoyed to blissful in your office? Consider being a less-sucky co-worker yourself
with these 7 things:
1. Be reliable. Show. Up.: You already know you should be “on time”. This goes beyond that. It is important
show you are committed to the team and that they can count on you. If your teammates wonder if you’ll
show up on time, you have already let them down.
2. Check your appearance: Feel more positive about your performance and boost the office environment by
“dressing for success.” Look at the environment of the office; is it business casual or business
professional? If the policy is to have your shoes shinned or wear nylons, well then, you better make that
happen.
3. Get (or fake) a positive attitude: A positive attitude in the workplace will make the environment a
welcoming space for other employees and clients. Greeting everyone each day, along with simple manners
like “please” and “thank you” shows your co-workers you don’t take them for granted.
4. Avoid the drama: Stay out of it. It’s easy to get sucked into the “she said, she said” world of an agency
however, be warned it will eat at your spirit and consume every moment at work. Sometimes a
misunderstanding can spiral out of control turning into a huge colossal problem. Something to remember
is that most of the time co-worker intentions are pure and good, right? Talk it out then hug it out. Ain’t
no one got time for the drama, you have clients to serve.
5. Be friendly, but not necessarily a friend: definitely not a friend with benefits: The best way to keep your
life at work professional is to keep a professional demeanor. Discourage advances or control a friendship
that shows signs of becoming intimate. Avoid flirting with your co-workers or bosses, limit your
conversations to work-related subjects, and keep all physical contact on a professional level. An office
romance could detract from the quality of your work and create an uncomfortable environment for you
and your colleagues.
6. Say “yes” to everything: Well, within reason that is. Don’t run yourself into the ground by taking on too
many projects; however, when you find you have the time to take on an opportunity, go for it! You may
be asked to join a volunteer group or attend a networking function, that’s a perfect opportunity to show
2. you’re driven and committed to growing as a professional. Your boss will love your initiative and go-
getter personality and it will improve your network.
7. Don’t turn work into social hour: You think work would be much more fun if you worked with your
friends. But being besties with your co-workers shouldn’t be your main goal. You don’t want to send the
message that you’re just there to socialize and gossip. There is plenty of time after work or on the
weekends when you can hang out with your co-workers and get to know them. That doesn’t mean that
you have to turn down an invite to go out to lunch or for drinks after work. Those impromptu moments
are usually the perfect bonding time.
Bonus thing: because we can’t leave well-enough alone. Number 8. Talk it out: Does a situation at work have
you down? Feeling a little paranoid? Don’t stew about it, talk it out. Confrontation in a calm and moderated
way will solve those problems and keep you from a breakdown. Be sure it’s private and courteous to avoid the
drama we talked about above.
