Peatlands that were previously primary forests emit significantly lower levels of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide compared to peatlands that were converted to oil palm plantations or secondary forests. Specifically, primary forests emit 4.0 ± 4.8 Mg CO2e ha-1 yr-1 while secondary forests and oil palm plantations emit 10.2 ± 4.5 and 31.7 ± 8.6 Mg CO2e ha-1 yr-1, respectively.

However, at the same time, it is affected by the negative impacts of it, in terms of lower yields and increase risks for food security. “The challenge of climate change, and what we do about it, will define us, our era, and ultimately, our global legacy”

This document discusses developing a global biodiversity indicator for use in resource policies. It analyzes several existing biodiversity impact assessment methods (MSA, ReCiPe, TNO) and concludes that combining features of these methods could create a more accurate indicator for comparing biodiversity impacts of different land use intensities, locations, crops, and biotic vs fossil products. The ReCiPe method currently provides the most suitable approach but could be improved by incorporating elements of the MSA and TNO methods such as restoration modeling and factors for biome uniqueness. Case studies show the indicators generally agree but give different outcomes for cases like organic vs conventional farming.

1) The study estimated the carbon stock of a protected tropical forest in Cebu, Philippines across three carbon pools: vegetation, soil, and litterfall. 2) A total of 20 plots were sampled across homogeneous and heterogeneous areas of the forest, which is dominated by Mahogany and Teak trees. 3) Results found an average of 653.9 tons of carbon stored per hectare in the forest's biomass. The homogeneous areas stored more carbon than heterogeneous areas. 4) Soil organic carbon and litterfall carbon were also quantified monthly from April to August 2010. 5) In total, the forest stores a significant amount of carbon across its three pools, helping to offset fossil fuel emissions

Reclamation of degraded lands has huge potential for carbon (C) sequestration to counteract the climate change. It was estimated that about 1,964 Mha of land is degraded worldwide and in India 146.8 Mha of land is degraded ( Bai et al., 2008). The major land-degradation processes in the World and in Asia are water erosion, wind erosion, salinity, alkalinity, nutrient depletion and metal pollution. Enrichment of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks through sequestration of atmospheric CO2 in agricultural soils and degraded lands is important because of its impacts on improving soil quality and agronomic production, and also for adaptation to mitigation of climate change. Various management strategies like conservation agriculture, integrated nutrient management, afforestation, alternate land use, plantations and amendments and use of biochar hold promise for long-term C sequestration. It can be concluded that land degradation is a serious problem in India which need to be tackled because shrinking of land resource base will lead to a substantial decline in food grain production which in turn would hamper the economic growth rate and there would also be unprecedented increase in mortality rate owing to hunger and malnutrition.

An organic farm was modeled to be self-sufficient in tractor fuel through the production and transport of biomass to an off-farm industrial facility that converts the biomass to different renewable fuels, which are then transported back to the farm. The land requirement for fuel production was between 2-5% of the farm area. Systems based on second generation fuels had higher energy balances and lower environmental impacts than first generation fuels. Production of mineral nitrogen fertilizer from biomass also reduced the use of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional production, but increased risks of eutrophication and acidification. Biomass systems have the potential to make agriculture less dependent on fossil fuels and lower emissions.
