Errors
What is wrong with the following specification?
We require a rough guess for the cost of eight internal doors. Your quotation should
binding and should be current for a month as we are starting the job in six months’ time
so will be ordering the doors in four months’ time. The doors are external hollow core
doors which are 34mm thick and will be used on bedrooms and bathrooms. You will need
to allow for the supply of Mortice deadlocks and letterboxes for the doors and one and a
half pair of 75mm butts.
Timber is to be English mahogany knotted and primed ready for polish.
The style of the doors is the client’s choice so you should contact him for confirmation of
the style. The estimate can be written in pencil on a piece of paper.

Correct statement
We require a binding competitive quotation for the supply of eight internal doors. Your
quotation should binding and should be current for three months. The contract starts in
four months so we will be looking to order within the next month to allow completion and
delivery in four months. The doors are 762mm x 1956mm x 34mm thick and will be used
on bedrooms and bathrooms. You will need to allow for the supply of lever latch handles
and cylinder latches for the bedrooms and bathroom latches and handles for the
bathrooms and one and a half pair of 75m butts.
Timber is to be Brazilian mahogany ready for polish.
The style of the doors is the client’s choice so you should contact us for confirmation of
the style. Quotation is to be written on letterhead paper with the date and signature
clearly visible.

How many errors did you spot?
An estimate is just that – a rough costing for the product and is not binding and can
increase and normally does.
A quotation is binding and cannot be altered without written agreement with the client or
his architect.
Quotations should always be written on letterhead paper with a date and should always
be accepted in writing.
You cannot usually get English mahogany. It is only grown in certain areas, such as Kew
Gardens, in this country and not to vast usable levels.
Note to tutor: The other errors are within your selected area of expertise, so a general
discussion should take place on them.

Which regulation and why
• Which regulation would you need to comply with in the production of either a private or
public staircase?
• What is the minimum gap allowed between balusters on a balustrade either up a flight
of stairs or across a landing and why?
• Take 15 minutes to go and research the answers, then return and discuss.

Drawings
A component drawing is to be found in which item of product regularly purchased from a
DIY store?
• Flat-pack units such as kitchen or bedroom units.
What would a quantity surveyor use/need to would draw up a list of materials required?
• Bill of quantities
What does a wood machinist require in order to produce the materials?
• Cutting list
What is a programme of works?
• Tracks the progress of the job and sets the timings for each task.

Tutor guidance
Above is just a general list of questions and answers which you can add to or alter as you
see fit.
Give the students regular breaks to research the answers either in books or on the
internet to break the time.
To add spice, you can give them some fake printed money (laminate these for future use)
and get them to bet on the answers. Keep the money when they are wrong but pay back
the same amount they bet when correct.
Add a time limit by setting a loud ticking clock to encourage a quick response.

Keep the money when they are wrong but pay back the same amount they bet when correct. Add a time limit by setting a loud ticking clock to encourage a quick response.
