Back to school

Independence
The independence of Colombia was preceded by various rebellions against Spanish colonization starting in 1555. Resistance continued to grow, including a rebellion by slaves in 1781. Between 1810-1816, many regions of Colombia fought for independence from Spain in the first war for independence, known as the "Patria Boba" period. Independence was finally achieved in 1819 with the Battle of Boyacá, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Colombia. Key figures in the independence movement included Antonio Nariño, José Celestino Mutis, and Policarpa Salavarrieta.
