Duties, Accomplishments and Related Skills:
Current position: Provide science and technical leadership for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Research Center Space
Biology Project in a contract position including; analyzing research progress across multiple scientific disciplines employing diverse technologies and
approaches to molecular, cellular, and/or physiological research, working closely with NASA headquarters to provide reports and recommendations for long-
range planning of strategic research, representing NASA at major scientific and technical meetings, preparing technical materials for internal program
progress reviews and critical project decision-making committees, and providing internal advocacy for life sciences while promoting research in support of
NASA’s strategic missions. Currently developing communications products to advocate for the continuation of Space Biology research beyond the
International Space Station to all agency stakeholders, also preparing a comprehensive summary of my analysis of the agency’s research progress on the
Decadal Survey Recommendations.
LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE and ACCOMPLISHMENTS
*Initiate the comprehensive analysis of Space Biology programmatic progress and prepared and presented an integrated report covering cumulative
research across multiple scientific disciplines at the annual ASGSR meeting in Cleveland, Ohio October 26 through 30, 2016. My work is currently being
used by SLPSRA to report on NASA progress in space biology research to the National Advisory Committee.
*Analyze and prepare the annual Space Biology grant planning budget of up to $8M during the Project Planning, Budgeting and Execution (PPBE) activities
for FY15, FY16, and FY17
*Participate in Space Biology NASA Research Announcement (NRA) development committee for the 2012 and 2014 NRAs and International Life Sciences
Research Announcement (ILSRA) and the Research Opportunities in Space Biology 2016 NASA Omnibus Research Announcement (ROSBio). Total
awards to date: 47 grants totaling over $30 million to fund new research.
*Manage the complete portfolio of Space Biology grant performance and research progress across the agency curating and reviewing over 400 peer-
reviewed journal articles from Space Biology-funded research, building a database of citations and metadata to manage the knowledge output of the
program office from 2007 to present (~10 years), building detailed schedules of research progress and identifying knowledge gaps, areas for future
research.
*Led the development of GeneLab; including coordinating a workshop to engage internal and external subject matter experts in the definition, developing an
early-phase concept of operations, communicating project objectives internally and to the extramural scientific community, and participating in the
development of the GeneLab Strategic Plan. GeneLab has since evolved into SLPSRA's highest priority initiative to support open-access science with a
project team and annual budget of $3M.
*Provide leadership on the FILMSS contract by performing the management of staffing and funding to ensure tasks, products and deliverables are
completed in compliance with their technical, schedule, and budget requirements, implementing appropriate planning and control techniques to ensure
effective use of personnel and resources and maintain appropriate mix of core/contract personnel to meet Task Request objectives.
*WetLab-2 Assessment Task Force: Participated in the evaluation of WetLab-2 qPCR enabling technology. The analysis and report resulted in resurrecting
development of this key scientific capability for future NASA missions, which was launched on SpaceX-8 was successfully validated aboard the ISS in May
2016.
*Created, developed, presented and represented the project with other groups at ARC, other NASA centers, and at 20 major technical-scientific meetings
across the United States from 2012 to the present.
