                                     Introduction

Life is a great gift to all of us. It is such a precious gift that we must use it
fruitfully and wisely. This is also true for animals. The presentation is designed
to talk you through the lifecycle of leather, paying particular attention to the
    humanity aspect towards animals.

Every day millions of animals are being slaughtered for leather. In that way
leather is no different from Meat. By way of this presentation we would like to
urge people to STOP using LEATHER goods.

LET US STOP THIS GLORY BUSINESS FROM OUR SIDE. LET US
AVOID THE BLOODY MASSACRE OF INNOCENT ANIMALS.
                                                                                    2
SAVE Animals by STOP using Leather

What is Leather? - Fashion statement or Cruelty
    Leather is an Animal skin.

    Myths about leather….

Some people believe that leather is produced from animals already died naturally.
Some people think it‟s OK to use leather because it is a by-product of meat industries

    Please remember that…

NOT ALL LEATHER COMES FROM MEAT INDUSTRY
The global leather industry slaughters every year more than a billion animals to create
fashionable expensive leather accessories for sale in fashion industries.

Leather is the most expensive product and income from leather constitutes a significant
portion of total revenue of animal industries. As such, now leather is considered as one
of the main products in the cattle industry.

The animals are killed only because there is a demand for their flesh and skin. If the
                                                                                         3
demand decreases, fewer animals will be killed

5 things every leather consumer should know
    1. One PETA investigation found that some slaughter
houses break the tails of their cows while they are
conscious, tobacco & chili powder rubbed into their
eyes. This forces the cattle to stay conscious and
mobile if they were to collapse en-route to the
slaughter house, usually the result of exhaustion.
                                                                Large plants commonly use
                                                                conveyor systems to restrain
                                                                cows and pigs during stunning

    2. Captive Bolt Stunning involves using a “gun” to
shoot a metal rod through the brain of the animal.
Often times these rods miss, creating a slow and
          excruciating death for the animal.

                                                                 Captive bolt stunning in center

5 things every leather consumer should know
    3. Designer bags often comes from reptiles
skinned alive because of the belief that live
flaying imparts more elasticity, or “give,” if
taken when the snake or lizard is still alive.
A nail through the head pins the animal to a
tree, a foot holds the writhing tail straight,
and a knife cuts down each side to rip off the Leather workers skinning snake
          skin.

    4. Kid goats are boiled alive to make gloves,
and the skins of unborn calves and lambs—
some purposely aborted, others taken from
          slaughtered pregnant cows and ewes—are
          considered especially “luxurious.”

                                                           Kid goat being burnt alive
                                                                                            5

5 things every leather consumer should know
    5. As the result of extremely confined
spaces, pigs are denied proper exercise
and become so weak that they can hardly
          move themselves several yards. Workers
          slam metal hooks into their
mouths, rectums, and eyes just to keep get
          them onto transportation trucks.

                            Baby-Animal Leather
Older animals produce coarse more inexpensive leather, while younger
    animals produce smoother, lighter leather

Younger the animal is at the time of slaughter, the smoother & finer the
grain structure of the skin, & the less likelihood of damage due to
scratches, parasites, or dung contamination. (Think of all the leather
products touting how “soft and supple” they are.) The skin of the female is
usually finer grained than that of the male and has a looser fiber structure
that results in a softer, stretcher leather. (Think of how much softer your
mother‟s skin is compared to your father‟s.)

                                                                                   8

Animal life before being slaughtered for fashion
    Upbringing
Animals are locked away their entire lives in industrial farms, deprived of all
opportunity to fulfill their natural needs including the bond between the
mother & young, social bonding& even basic physical needs like eating food
essential to their health or seeing sunlight.

    Transportation
Animals are crammed onto trucks until there is no more room, body against
body, tied together by a rope, & transported hundreds of kilometers on bumpy
roads to the slaughterhouse. Fractures and death are a regular consequence of
    these horrific journeys.

                                                                                      9

                         Leather Material Alternatives
    • Artificial leather : Are made using a wide variety of materials and processes, making it likely that you
can find a fake leather that suits your tastes. While many fake leathers are made from different kinds of
plastic, some earth-friendly, vegan faux leather is made from plant fibers and eco-friendly processes. Fake
suedes look very much like the real thing, made with a realistic-looking artificial nap. Look to wholesale
fabric suppliers for the widest selections of fake leathers

    • Rubber : Compared to leather, rubber is more stretchy, but similar in appearance and strength to certain
treatments of leather. Rubber is a popular alternative to leather for flexible shoe soles, some clothing
(especially novelty clothing) and hand-held items or grips, such as steering wheel grips

    • Denim : For a basic tough, long-lasting fabric that's often a good stand-in for leather, use thick, tightly-
wound denim. Denim is a good fill-in for small handcrafted items where you would normally use
leather, such as book bindings, billfolds or small pouches. Be sure to give loose denim edges a hem or coat
them with hemming glue; although denim is comparable to leather in toughness and flexibility, unlike
      leather, it will fray

treatments of leather. Rubber is a popular alternative to leather for flexible shoe soles, some clothing
(especially novelty clothing) and hand-held items or grips, such as steering wheel grips

    • Vinyl : Vinyl is a popular replacement for leather, especially in the manufacture of clothing. It may come
in the form of realistic-looking textured fake leather, or it may be used to create shiny, form-fitting clothes
that can be flashier than leather while still producing a similar look.
