This document discusses 5 types of African vocal music: Maracatu, Blues, Soul, Spirituals, and Call and Response. Maracatu originated in Brazil combining Portuguese melodies with local instruments. Blues developed in late 19th century African American communities using notes that create an expressive and soulful sound. Spirituals were songs created by enslaved Africans in America to express their loneliness, anger, and interaction of African and American religious music. Call and Response involves alternating musical phrases between different musicians.
