  • #10 1 MINUTE In the next couple slides, I’m going to give you 3 universal truths that we see (there are more), and then we’ll dig-into the 7 deadly sins that are most common and most recurring across the organizations we see.
  • #11 1 MINUTE
  • #12 1 MINUTE
  • #13 2 MINUTES The first thing to do is to lay aside your ideas for the tool or tools you have chosen. You can do this even if you already have SP. Just don’t focus on SharePoint. People often say, but we don’t know what it can do. We need to see a demo, know about the tool, etc. Tell us what other companies are doing with it. Garage analogy Throwing tools at it – most organizations are really looking for a technology “quick fix” - it just doesn’t work like that. It also leads to the Silver Bullet Syndrome Want more proof? CLICK
  • #14 1 MINUTE http://blogs.gartner.com/carol_rozwell/2013/08/20/outputs-are-important-but-behaviors-are-better/ http://www.mycustomer.com/topic/social-crm/gartner-80-social-business-efforts-will-not-succeed-through-2015/161754 http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2319215 More detailed analysis is available in the report "Predicts 2013: Social and Collaboration Go Deeper and Wider." The report is available on Gartner's website at http://www.gartner.com/resId=2254316.  However, whilst adoption is set to escalate, Gartner estimates that through 2015, 80% of social business efforts will not achieve the intended benefits due to inadequate leadership and an overemphasis on technology. Carol Rozwell, VP and distinguished analyst at Gartner, explained: “Businesses need to realize that social initiatives are different from previous technology deployments. Traditional technology rollouts, such as ERP or CRM, followed a ‘push’ paradigm. Rozwell added: “There is too much focus on content and technology, and not enough focus on leadership and relationships. Leaders need to develop a social business strategy that makes sense for the organization and tackle the tough organizational change work head on and early on. Successful social business initiatives require leadership and behavioral changes. Just sponsoring a social project is not enough — managers need to demonstrate their commitment to a more open, transparent work style by their actions.”
  • #15 2 MINUTES One thing we have found to be certain is that focusing on technology always leads to disappointments. Garage analogy This includes being “owned” by IT (or the business) – it should be a collaboration between them. Focus on connecting people, bringing people together As you approach the 2nd and 3rd times, people really begin to lose faith/trust in the next solution and become more resistant Failure not only costs money, it costs satisfaction (which lowers productivity), and ultimately could cost jobs Avoid the Silver Bullet Technology is a wonderful thing, but it’s not the only thing One size never fits all Understand what it is you are building and for whom
  • #16 2 MINUTES People are at the heart of every SharePoint project. After all, that’s why you’re here right – to get PEOPLE to use it better? Instead of focusing on the technology, shift your focus to planning for people. Questions: What do people need to do their job better? What are they struggling with? What complaints do I hear? Practically speaking: When you do go to implement it, give them some immediate value – after all, it was built for them. Get them involved in the process – don’t just “roll it out and hope they use it” People will always support what they help create Have a formal project team – members can change. Reduce Friction – make it easy – we’ll talk more about this later Lastly, realize that our organizations and the people in our orgs are changing CLICK
  • #17 2 MINUTES Just as information and our reaction to it evolving, so are our teams today These aren’t the organizations or teams of yesteryear (or even yesterday) They are often short-lived Very much project-based We’re seeing teams become very fluid – no longer is it 1 department or 1 group of people working on a project We’re also not coming into the office as much In fact, Global Leadership Summit in London found that nearly 50% of the workforce will be remote by 2020 This is a new age of working – We’re a part of a new generation of collaboration… Speaking of generation… CLICK http://www.fastcompany.com/3034286/the-future-of-work/will-half-of-people-be-working-remotely-by-2020 http://www.stcservices.com/blog/unified-communications/remote-workers-to-be-50-of-workforce-by-2020-is-virtual-becoming-reality/ http://www.adweek.com/socialtimes/social-media-addiction-stats/504131
  • #18 1 MINUTE You’re spending a lot of time and money on this initiative – what are you getting for it? CLICK
  • #19 2 MINUTES The last thing I want to talk about in terms of physical collaboration is probably one of the largest changes in our organizations – the PEOPLE themselves. Millennials in the workforce is on the rise, and by 2020 (I think before this), they will be the majority in our organizations? Don’t think this matters…? Did you guys know that only 1/3 of Millennials leave for more money? And when they do choose to leave, it’s only after about 3 years? And that if these 2 things weren’t enough, about the time that millennials make up the majority of our workforce, we’ll have yet ANOTHER generation entering the workforce – and these employees literally grew-up knowing only about the Internet, social media, etc. How will these generations work together? Think technology will automatically make a 65 year old work seamlessly with a 22 year old? Think again. Generational changes are some of the most frequent conversations we’re having today with our clients CLICK
  • #20 1 MINUTES I think I just heard the collective gasp when you read that, but yes, you read it right. I want you to “loosen up” in terms of rules for SharePoint What if I told you, you can pick any color you want, as long as it’s blue? You’d look at me like I was crazy, right? But we see this in so many organizations With so much compliance these days, I think we’ve gone to the extreme GOVERNANCE TOOLKIT CLICK In fact, did you know that…
  • #21 2 MINUTES You don’t have to implement every one…I promise! We have to find the balance Generational changes (25 year olds and 65 year olds working together) CLICK Examples: Rigid Core: Retention of 7 years Flexible Edges: Check in/out policy CLICK
  • #22 2 MINUTES You know it’s funny – a lot of us have goals, but it’s only a handful that have formal plans to achieve those goals. CLICK
  • #23 1 MINUTE In fact, I love this quote by Stephen Covey. If you don’t have a plan, a roadmap to get where you are going, why have a goal to begin with? But maybe we’re jumping ahead – we see many organizations that don’t even have goals, so if you don’t have clear and measurable goals, start there. Set goals and metrics, because you’ll never know if you are achieving success if you have no goals to begin with. And this isn’t talking just about a project plan, but a plan for how you will achieve your business goals and also a plan for how we’ll achieve our adoption goals and metrics? Don’t just say, “We want an Intranet online by end of year.” Does this sound like your goals? 1) What exactly does an Intranet mean for your organization and 2) Why end of year? Is there significance to that date? Practically speaking: What is our definition of success? What does done look like? Where are we going? How long to get there? Any risks along the way? But don’t take my word for it… CLICK
  • #24 2 MINUTES Here are some stats on just how important it is to have proper planning CLICK
  • #25 2 MINUTES One the best ways to go from a sad face to a happy face is to make sure your people are prepared and aware Prepare: Training is not an event Start it early and often Have ambassadors Do lunch n learns Different users - Power users, site owners, end users, librarians, etc. Proclaim (communicate) Lack of communication – it goes a long way Let people know what’s going on and why. Formal communication plan Get people excited Get people involved Ask their opinion People support (and use) what they help create
  • #26 2 MINUTES One the best ways to go from a sad face to a happy face is to make sure your people are prepared and aware People support (and use) what they help create CLICK
  • #27 2 MINUTES One the best ways to go from a sad face to a happy face is to make sure your people are prepared and aware Prepare: Training is not an event Start it early and often Have ambassadors Do lunch n learns Different users - Power users, site owners, end users, librarians, etc. Proclaim (communicate) Lack of communication – it goes a long way Let people know what’s going on and why. Formal communication plan Get people excited Get people involved Ask their opinion People support (and use) what they help create
  • #28 1 MINUTE Adoption is change – this will change how people work. But without change, there is no innovation, growth and certainly no ROI. Be the person who embraces and initiates change within your organizations. If done right, your users will thank you for it!
