2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Style sheet
By using either of these two fonts (above) I'd be sticking to the brand (of "Doctor Who.")
However the text could be a little too bold and a little to eccentric to use throughout the
magazine – for all the text. So I might choose to uses it for just the headings and sub-
headings.
3. Style sheet
This text would fit in with the run down page style... However – again, it might be a too
bold and stylized to use as all of the text rather to just headings and sub-headings.
Red Over wash
VORTEX
Dalek
Gold
Crystal
and
Neck-Scarf
Black And White
The red over-wash is to represent the
overshadowing evil of the Daleks.
These colours will be used to help the cover art
seem less bland and consist of more colours than
just red in a mixture of black and white.
This will be used to help the characters to stand out
from the background on the magazine cover.
4. Layout 1; Cover
For the main colour I want to make
minimalist – contrasting with the mass of
plant life toning in red to straight on
black and white for things like rocks and
characters. With the characters are in
black and white, I plan on adding
patches of colour.
I've chosen the colour red as it's often
associated with evil. To represent over-
shadowing evil I covered the landscape
in red. As whole this represent the
"over-shadowing" - "evil" that the Daleks
bring to the story.
As well as this, by making the characters
"black and white" I will make the them
stand out – distinguishing them from the
scenery.
With the text and logo's I plan on making
the text and logo – bold and white. With
the background being more dark and
consisting of allot of red (which is quite a
dark colour) - it'll stand out.
5. Layout 2; Page
Personally I can feel put off or slightly
intimidated by a black text on a white
page as it feels plain and constant... To
overcome this, I've applied a texture and
enlarged the text to become slightly less
straining on the readers eyes.
As well as this, I've chosen to apply
images (linked with the story) spread
across the page – removing the
background from behind the image each
time. By doing this, I hope to make the
images appear less square and more
professional – making seem less like it'd
been made entirely in software's such as
word and publisher.
6. Props & Locations
Props/Costume needed Locations needed
Daleks Khan (Jungle Planet)
The Keys (Blue crystals)

7. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
I may not find an image of a character in a
position I'm entirely hoped for.
Find a picture of that character in a similar
position and proceed to edit them into a
position that's more suitable – either using
other images or the current image, across the
spand of available tools.
Copy-right on the theme of -"Doctor Who." Keep it safe under the use of "Fair Use
Act..."
8. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
From sitting in chair all day this may bring out
back issues from potentially sitting in a weird
positions all day.
A good way to avoid this is by allowing yourself
to take breaks rather than just sit there for a
solid block of time – start till finish.
Getting overly tired and stressed with work... Ensure that you maintain good health, with
getting plenty of sleep and breaks to avoid the
"potential issue."
