1. CHAPTER FOUR
PHOTOGRAMMETRY
Definition of Photogrammetry
Branches of Photogrammetry
Types of photography
Applications of Photogrammetry
1.1. Definition of Photogrammetry
Photogrammetry can be divided as
photo+gram+metry. Where Photo means Intensity of light, Gram
means techniques and Metry means Measurements in (x,y,z) directions.
It is defined as an Art and Science of making the measurements (precise) and
also obtaining the reliable information of the objects and environment through
the process of recording, measuring, interpreting
photographic images and patterns of recorded radiant electromagnetic energy
and other phenomena.
2. 1.2. Types of Photogrammetry
In general it is broadly classified into two types
1.Metric Photogrammetry
2.Interpretative Photogrammetry
1. Metric Photogrammetry
Is used for making the precise measurements of the objects through
the techniques by getting the reliable information such as distance,
angles, area and volume etc.
2.Interpretative Photogrammetry
Is used for identifying and judging the significance of various
objects with various keys (or) aids and getting the information
about various objects
Other Types:
1.Analogue Photogrammetry
2.Analytical Photogrammetry
3.Digital Photogrammetry
4.Closed range Photogrammetry
3. 1.3.Types of Photography
1. Aerial Photography
-Aerial photographs are taken by aerial cameras mounted in an
aircraft
2. Terrestrial Photography
-It is done by ground based cameras
4. Applications of Photogrammetry
1. Preparation of topographic maps
2. Many special purpose maps are made by Photogrammetry methods
3. Photogrammetry is widely used as a valuable tool in the land use
planning
4. Aerial Mosaics can be prepared from the aerial photographs for highway
studies and for the best route for highway
5. It is used in preparation of various thematic maps such as soil map, road
map, forest map, city map geology map etc.3
6. Photogrammetry is useful for traffic management, traffic analysis.
7. Used in the field of medicine, especially in x-ray measurements
8. It is very much useful in Military such as targeting the sides and spotting
the loops
