This document summarizes experience with two early distributed generation systems from 1979-1995. It describes a coal-fired Rankine system with a steam turbine and reciprocating expander that provided combined heat and power. It also details a diesel-driven distributed generation system using a diesel engine to drive an induction generator while recovering heat for building heating. Both systems aimed to generate electricity with no increase in fuel consumption compared to conventional heating systems.
