Exam questions
The title of the poem is Dulce et
Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen.
Exam questions
The poet is thinking of the brutality of war. He
highlights that war is not something beautiful
or glorious. Owen, an English poet from
Shropshire fought and died in the First World
War.He bases this poem around his
experience of a gas attack. He describes the
conditions that the soldiers encounter. They
are returning from battle when the attack
occurs. One man fails to fit his gas mask and
dies. Owen reflects on how inglorious the
death is and wants all young people to be told
the truth.
Exam questions

the language of the poem contributes to

choking, drowning. I could see in this vivid
image the man’s slow agonising death.
Another image, that of the gas like a green
        sea is very memorable.
    ‘ Dim through… sea’

( b Owen presents the image of his colleagues
         )
The final verse is perhaps the most shocking.

throwing his body onto a wagon.
    ‘If in some smothering… in’
I was almost sick at the sight of the ‘ white eyes
writhing in his face’ and the ‘blood come
gargling from the froth corrupted lungs’ The
        onomatopoeia here was effective
Owen ends the poem with the ironic Latin
saying. He calls it an ‘old lie’ and leaves us in
no doubt about his thoughts on war.
