Wordsworth wrote the Preface to explain his theory of poetry, which was that poetry is a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings. He believed that a poet is a man who speaks to other men and that poetic diction should use the language of man in a state of vivid sensation, with a certain coloring of imagination. There is no essential difference between prose and poetic language. The Preface establishes Wordsworth's view that poetry reflects humble and rustic life and creates a framework for how he should be read and enjoyed, using careful psychological observation and self-analysis.
