I. Description of Overall Project: Personal Inventory and Comparison to Group Data
Overall Goals: The goal of this project is to write a 3-4 page, double spaced paper based on survey data that you will access from a database of opinion and attitude questions posed to a representative sample of Americans (see below for details on how to do this). You will learn how to use this survey data base, report on the results of survey question(s) and analyze the relationship between the responses to the question and what these attitudes reflect about the changing nature of American values over time. Please read the entire instructions before you begin or you won’t know how to use the survey database, which takes a bit of time to learn.
You will present your analysis following using the following organizational format:
1. Introduction: Briefly discuss the relationship between values and how they relate to attitudes about social institutions and societal concerns.
2. Body/Analysis: Describe trends or changes based on the example provided. Be sure to include the most recent data that runs up to 2016 in your report. See the section on "presenting the analysis" below for more specific instructions.
3. Consider the possible "contradiction" or tension in the data results (again, see below for details) in relation to American values we've considered and changes in American society related, for example, to sexuality, gender, rights, etc. Explain what underlying values may be in conflict here that account for the tension? Specifically, what principles of American values that we have covered may be at play in accounting for this? Look back at the Robin Williams list and especially the chapter assigned for Week 5 to help you (you should cite both). When thinking about “revolutions”, and the true meaning of the word, I feel that it represents desire, and a driving force to achieve a goal. With this in mind, we can easily use the example of America battling for freedom against British rule. America was upset over the taxes that Britain was forcing on them, and many of the laws that benefited Britain and made life harder for Americans. In the reading, Peter Gay describes this period of revolution as “freedom from arbitrary power, freedom of speech, freedom of trade, freedom to realize one’s talents, freedom of aesthetic response, freedom, in a word, of moral man to make his way in the world.” (Sayre, 2013). What all revolutions have in common, contemporary ones and those in the past, is resistance to a perceived tyranny. It makes a big difference if the tyranny is seen as an imposition from outside, as it was in America in 1776, and in this century, in India and elsewhere, or if the tyranny is seen to reside in an internal structure, as in France in the 18th century and Russia and China in the 20th. The purpose of all revolutionaries, nevertheless, is to achieve power. According to Sayre., H. M. (2013). The American Declaration of Independence is one of the Enlightenment’s boldest assertions of freedom. In some instances, it may suffice simply to shift power to local hands and leave the social order essentially unchanged. This is what happened in the American Revolution. In others - as was the case in France and Russia - power is redistributed and the society is turned upside down. The more familiar kind of Latin American upheaval, the palace coup where a leader is removed from power by the people who have worked with him or her.

Dear Professor and class,
When thinking about “revolutions”, and the true meaning of the word, I feel that it represents desire, and a driving force to achieve a goal. With this in mind, we can easily use the example of America battling for freedom against British rule. America was upset over the taxes that Britain was forcing on them, and many of the laws that benefited Britain and made life harder for Americans. In the reading, Peter Gay describes this period of revolution as “freedom from arbitrary power, freedom of speech, freedom of trade, freedom to realize one’s talents, freedom of aesthetic response, freedom, in a word, of moral man to make his way in the world.” (Sayre, 2013). What all revolutions have in common, contemporary ones and those in the past, is resistance to a perceived tyranny. It makes a big difference if the tyranny is seen as an imposition from outside, as it was in America in 1776, and in this century, in India and elsewhere, or if the tyranny is seen to reside in an internal structure, as in France in the 18th century and Russia and China in the 20th. The purpose of all revolutionaries, nevertheless, is to achieve power. According to Sayre., H. M. (2013). The American Declaration of Independence is one of the Enlightenment’s boldest assertions of freedom. In some instances, it may suffice simply to shift power to local hands and leave the social order essentially unchanged. This is what happened in the American Revolution. In others - as was the case in France and Russia - power is redistributed and the society is turned upside down. The more familiar kind of Latin American upheaval, the palace coup where a leader is removed from power by the people who have worked with him or her.

The third portfolio entry requires the construction of a document that reflects the information you have learned in Unit V.
The assignment will also test your ability to think critically about the concepts within the unit. This portfolio entry should be in one word document with proper headings for each section.
This project allows you to develop some interviewing skills, generate tables, create a timeline, and write a debate. These different mini projects allow you to think outside of the box of the traditional assignment and assessment format, stretching your academic capabilities and applying them to the sociology discipline.
1. Ask five people how they would define racism, religion, and family, and then summarize the definitions. Identify the similarities and differences in the definitions. Provide your own definitions of each and how they relate to each other.
a. You can use any means you want to interview people. Social media (Facebook, Twitter,
etc.), email, or personal interviews are all acceptable.
2. Generate a table with a list of the different patterns of interaction between minority and majority groups. The table should have three columns:
a. One column for the models
b. One column providing three facts about each model
c. One column providing two different examples for each model
3. Develop a K-W-L table for each of the racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Create three columns for each table with the following categories: What I KNOW (K), what I WANT to know (W), and what I LEARNED (L).
Complete the “K” and “W” sections, listing at least three things you know and three things that you want to know about each of the racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Then, perform research on the different associated cultures, and list three things you learned about the different cultures, and fill them in the “L” section.
4. Create a timeline listing the different stages of family life. Make note of any events, significant milestones, or problems that may occur.
5. Argue both sides (supporting and rejecting) the following statement in one to two paragraphs: The religions in the world will never get along because they are too different.
