Week 5: Roots of Revolution
Consider the role of revolution in governmental structure and
culture. Provide an example from the reading for the week or
your experience visiting the National Archives to explain the
relationship between philosophy and political action.

From student CA
Dear Professor and class,
When thinking about “revolutions”, and the true meaning of the
word, I feel that it represents desire, and a driving force to
achieve a goal. With this in mind, we can easily use the
example of America battling for freedom against British rule.
America was upset over the taxes that Britain was forcing on
them, and many of the laws that benefited Britain and made life
harder for Americans. In the reading, Peter Gay describes this
period of revolution as “freedom from arbitrary power, freedom
of speech, freedom of trade, freedom to realize one’s talents,
freedom of aesthetic response, freedom, in a word, of moral
man to make his way in the world.” (Sayre, 2013). What all
revolutions have in common, contemporary ones and those in
the past, is resistance to a perceived tyranny. It makes a big
difference if the tyranny is seen as an imposition from outside,
as it was in America in 1776, and in this century, in India and
elsewhere, or if the tyranny is seen to reside in an internal
structure, as in France in the 18th century and Russia and China
in the 20th. The purpose of all revolutionaries, nevertheless, is
to achieve power. According to Sayre., H. M. (2013). The
American Declaration of Independence is one of the
Enlightenment’s boldest assertions of freedom. In some
instances, it may suffice simply to shift power to local hands
and leave the social order essentially unchanged. This is what
happened in the American Revolution. In others - as was the
case in France and Russia - power is redistributed and the
society is turned upside down. The more familiar kind of Latin
American upheaval, the palace coup where a leader is removed
from power by the people who have worked with him or her.

Helpful Hints ...
Same Writing Approach ...
One of my favorite books that I use here at Limestone. The
author does a great job outlining an approach to effective
writing. Systematic process that applies to most all type of
letters. The approach of all writing is Pre-writing (goal of
message and identify the audience), Writing (composing the
message in a 3-paragraph format) and Editing (reviewing and
making message brief and effective).
For Emails
Start with a attention-grabbing Subject Line ... create a reason
for the reader to read the email (be professional)
P1 ... include intro and specific reason or request.
P2 ... details and facts of the first paragraph.
P3 ... follow up with time, dates and resolution.
Select one of the scenarios below and write an email. Hints
above and many examples in MindTap
* A new customer has requested product information. They are
interested in doing business with our company. They have also
requested quotations on two products.
* American Red Cross Blood Drive is coming up in two weeks.
Typically your department has had limited participation with
this type of activity.
* The company has implemented a no smoking policy for all
employees. Smoking is not permitted on company property.
* The company is creating a special work team to improve
customer complaints and improve response time to customer
complaints. Your department is one of the primary departments
that come in contact with our customers.
* The information for new health care benefits is available for
2012. Human Resource department has requested that all
employees attend the meeting. Employees have been skipping
the meeting and then coming to HR department with many
questions … very inefficient process.
* One of your employees has been recognized in the community
for outstanding charity work. The company has made a $1000
donation to recognize the job well done by your employee.
* Monthly budgets are out. You need to review the results of
your department and make corrections to the areas that are over
budget.
* You have just recently hired another employee for your
department. The employee will work closely with customer
service and customer complaints.
Assignment: Research Current Events - Final Draft (Formal)
Points: 30
Assignment Response / Format ... Attachment (Word Document)
4 pages min ... Formatted APA/MLA
____________________________________________
Now it is time to bring the final copy together ... using the
feedback from your rough draft and tips from our book. This is
also an opportunity to "enhance" your paper ... see comments
below.
Final Draft Tips
* Address my feedback and comments from rough draft
* Add an "attention-grabbing" title to your paper
* APA / MLA formatting ... page numbers, title block, running
headers (APA), in-text citations, works cited / reference page.
The templates in the research folder will show your the proper
format.
* Double check your grammar, spelling, punctuation,
noun/verbs, margins, font, indentions, spacing, and get rid of
the "things"
* Use the feedback from the word processors ... the green and
red squiggly lines are good at showing errors in your paper.
Enhancements
Here are examples how you can improve the readability and
enhance your paper.
1) add bullets and number lists, where appropriate
2) add Level 1 and Level2 headers to break up the text ... for
this paper you can probably add 3-5 headers. Follow the
APA/MLA guidelines for headers, titles and sub-headers. Don't
over do it.
3) add supporting graphs and charts where appropriate
4) Shorter paragraphs and shorter sentences to assist with
readability
Feedback from Roughdraft
Thanks for your submission. Great topic, professionally written
and organized. Title page and Reference page is correct
following the APA style. Great job explaining your topic,
outlining what the paper will be covering, and using examples.
Just remember to proofread again before sending the final
draft. Great job!
Remember to list all authors' names when you first cite their
work and then use the one author's name with et al. thereafter.
Due August 17th
Two-part assignment ...
Part 1 - Go to the job search sites ... Yahoo Jobs, Career
Builder, LinkedIn, Monster, or your company's website and find
a job that would be the next step in your career path. If you are
currently not working, send the job you would like to
pursue. Include the link of the position your are looking at.
Part 2 - Write a cover letter for this open position. Follow the
guidelines from the book ... 3-paragraph format.
P1 - Request and Job info … where found.
P2 - Details of position with emphasis of connecting your
resume/skills to the open position
P3 - Contact info and follow-up
Tips ...
Several great examples of cover letters in the MindTap area this
week.
· Remember the "you-view" ... NOT: I have skills and need a
job ... YES: I can be an asset to your company, make
contributions to your organization, etc.
· Remember ... your contact info, preferably in P3 ... email
address, phone number
· Finally ... do not write: "possibly" "maybe" "hope" ... be
confident and positive
· Paragraph 2 needs to highlight your skills and connect it to the
verbiage written in the job posting
· FYI ... every cover letter must be customized; standard form
letter will not get the job

Week 5 Roots of RevolutionConsider the role of revolution in go.docx

  • 1. Week 5: Roots of Revolution Consider the role of revolution in governmental structure and culture. Provide an example from the reading for the week or your experience visiting the National Archives to explain the relationship between philosophy and political action. _________________________ From student CA Dear Professor and class, When thinking about “revolutions”, and the true meaning of the word, I feel that it represents desire, and a driving force to achieve a goal. With this in mind, we can easily use the example of America battling for freedom against British rule. America was upset over the taxes that Britain was forcing on them, and many of the laws that benefited Britain and made life harder for Americans. In the reading, Peter Gay describes this period of revolution as “freedom from arbitrary power, freedom of speech, freedom of trade, freedom to realize one’s talents, freedom of aesthetic response, freedom, in a word, of moral man to make his way in the world.” (Sayre, 2013). What all revolutions have in common, contemporary ones and those in the past, is resistance to a perceived tyranny. It makes a big difference if the tyranny is seen as an imposition from outside, as it was in America in 1776, and in this century, in India and elsewhere, or if the tyranny is seen to reside in an internal structure, as in France in the 18th century and Russia and China in the 20th. The purpose of all revolutionaries, nevertheless, is to achieve power. According to Sayre., H. M. (2013). The American Declaration of Independence is one of the Enlightenment’s boldest assertions of freedom. In some instances, it may suffice simply to shift power to local hands and leave the social order essentially unchanged. This is what happened in the American Revolution. In others - as was the case in France and Russia - power is redistributed and the society is turned upside down. The more familiar kind of Latin
  • 2. American upheaval, the palace coup where a leader is removed from power by the people who have worked with him or her. Reference: Sayre, H. M. (2013). Discovering the humanities (2nd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall. Type of Assignment: Office Email (Informal) Length ... Three paragraph format Assignment Format ... Submit assignment as an attachment ... Word Document ____________________________________________ Helpful Hints ... Same Writing Approach ... One of my favorite books that I use here at Limestone. The author does a great job outlining an approach to effective writing. Systematic process that applies to most all type of letters. The approach of all writing is Pre-writing (goal of message and identify the audience), Writing (composing the message in a 3-paragraph format) and Editing (reviewing and making message brief and effective). For Emails Start with a attention-grabbing Subject Line ... create a reason for the reader to read the email (be professional) P1 ... include intro and specific reason or request. P2 ... details and facts of the first paragraph. P3 ... follow up with time, dates and resolution. Select one of the scenarios below and write an email. Hints above and many examples in MindTap * A new customer has requested product information. They are interested in doing business with our company. They have also requested quotations on two products. * American Red Cross Blood Drive is coming up in two weeks. Typically your department has had limited participation with this type of activity. * The company has implemented a no smoking policy for all

Human Resource department has requested that all employees attend the meeting. Employees have been skipping the meeting and then coming to HR department with many questions … very inefficient process. * One of your employees has been recognized in the community for outstanding charity work. The company has made a $1000 donation to recognize the job well done by your employee. * Monthly budgets are out. You need to review the results of your department and make corrections to the areas that are over budget. * You have just recently hired another employee for your department. The employee will work closely with customer service and customer complaints. Assignment: Research Current Events - Final Draft (Formal) Points: 30 Assignment Response / Format ... Attachment (Word Document) 4 pages min ... Formatted APA/MLA ____________________________________________ Now it is time to bring the final copy together ... using the feedback from your rough draft and tips from our book. The templates in the research folder will show your the proper format. * Double check your grammar, spelling, punctuation, noun/verbs, margins, font, indentions, spacing, and get rid of the "things" * Use the feedback from the word processors ... the green and red squiggly lines are good at showing errors in your paper.
