Unit V Project
Portfolio Project 3:
The third portfolio entry requires the construction of a document that reflects the information you have learned in Unit V.
The assignment will also test your ability to think critically about the concepts within the unit. This portfolio entry should be in one word document with proper headings for each section.
This project allows you to develop some interviewing skills, generate tables, create a timeline, and write a debate. These different mini projects allow you to think outside of the box of the traditional assignment and assessment format, stretching your academic capabilities and applying them to the sociology discipline.
1. Ask five people how they would define racism, religion, and family, and then summarize the definitions. Identify the similarities and differences in the definitions. Provide your own definitions of each and how they relate to each other.
a. You can use any means you want to interview people. Social media (Facebook, Twitter,
etc.), email, or personal interviews are all acceptable.
2. Generate a table with a list of the different patterns of interaction between minority and majority groups. The table should have three columns:
a. One column for the models
b. One column providing three facts about each model
c. One column providing two different examples for each model
3. Develop a K-W-L table for each of the racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Create three columns for each table with the following categories: What I KNOW (K), what I WANT to know (W), and what I LEARNED (L).
Complete the “K” and “W” sections, listing at least three things you know and three things that you want to know about each of the racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Then, perform research on the different associated cultures, and list three things you learned about the different cultures, and fill them in the “L” section.
4. Create a timeline listing the different stages of family life. Make note of any events, significant milestones, or problems that may occur.
5. Argue both sides (supporting and rejecting) the following statement in one to two paragraphs: The religions in the world will never get along because they are too different.

Possible topics:
Topic: Gender and our Bodies: Investigate the gender of current products designed to help people alter their bodies in some way. You might begin by making a list of all the products that fall into this category (if you are creative, this could be a fairly long list). Then think about which of these products seem to be aimed primarily at men, which at men, and which at both sexes. Look at the advertisements for these products in magazines, television ads, or on the internet. What gender messages are begin sent in these advertisements? What does your investigation suggest about men’s and women’s feelings about their bodies? (as an alternative, you can do research on how we manipulate our body to meet the gender binary goal e.g. cosmetic surgery)
Topic: Culture and Menstruation Taboos: Many cultures have menstruation taboos, dictating behaviors women can and cannot engage in when they are menstruating. Use online resources and your library to do some research on how different cultures think about menstruation and the norms they have regarding this biological process. How do these practices compare with those in your own culture?
Topic: Division of Labor in your Household: Write an essay in which you describe what the division of household labor was like in your own house growing up. Who did what, and how did everyone seem to feel about it? Were there tensions over who did what tasks? What would be your ideal division of household labor if you were to form your own household?
Topic: Couples and Household Labor: Interview some couple about their division of household labor. You might interview both together or each separately. Come up with an extensive list of all the tasks that are involved in maintaining a household, and ask your ...

NOTE:
Because this course is extremely condensed into 40 days, I will be posting much of the material ahead of when it is due, for students to work through at their own pace; in other words, you can work ahead as you feel like it. There are certain pieces of material, from Unit Two forward, that will be added to both the
Course Documents
, where the assigned readings are, and
Discussion Board
, where focused questions and material will guide your responses. The materials will be added in time for use by the various intermediate deadlines. However, there are particular deadlines for completion of the discussion writing on the various units of material as well as the two papers that make up the grade, and students must pay close attention to these deadlines in order to complete the course.
Course Goals:
This course will examine the experience of sports and leisure for different groups of Americans (e.g., African-Americans, women, working class), from colonial times to the present but primarily focused on the 20th century. My goal is to introduce students to historical analysis and argument through the examination of the sports and leisure time activities that won increasing popularity among Americans from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. This course will incorporate analytical categories from social history (class, race, gender, ethnicity) as well as the frameworks used by cultural, economic, and political history. This course will thus involve students in gaining a better understanding of the relationships that sports and leisure have with the social, economic, cultural and political forces at work in the United States and the world. Students will appreciate the issues that have affected sports participation over the years, including racial and gender discrimination, class economics, and commercialization.
Students are expected to learn not only the basic data of American social history of sports but also to express that knowledge in oral and written argument that employs evidence to prove historical theses. Precise assignments for discussion are given at the end of this syllabus. Students will also be expected to use the Blackboard site for discussion. This course is thus NOT about player statistics, won-loss records, and/or fantasy leagues. It is about understanding the role sports has played in American society over time, and that is a serious historical inquiry.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
1) Identify and analyze the changing meaning and significance of sports and leisure to American society and culture.
2) Discuss the major developments in sports as they were influenced by major social, economic, cultural and political forces in American history, and (in turn) how sports pa.

Prep Assignment: Create an Outline
Applying the Sociological Perspective: an analysis of a topic and an organization using a sociological perspective
Of the 12 social issue topics that were given, which topic did you choose? Remember that you will need at least 3 academic sources minimum. Start to search our FTCC library for those needed sources. For example, peer-reviewed journal articles can be found in our library. Your outline should be 1.5-2 pages.
Some Electronic Databases from our FTCC library that will be useful:
– CQ Researcher – Current Events
– InfoTrac Newsstand
– Issues & Controversies
– Opposing Viewpoints in Context
– SIRS
You may also consider other additional sources: .edu., .org., .gov. sites such as:
Center of Disease Control (https://www.cdc.gov)
Pew Research Center (http://www.pewresearch.org)
World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/en/)
Census.gov (https://www.census.gov)
After you choose your topic and find some academic sources for your paper- it’s time to begin creating your prep assignment: Your Outline:
For Example:
· I. I chose to do my paper on Global povertyfrom the list. I will discuss why global poverty is on the rise and has increased in developing countries, as well as an organization in society that is addressing this issue. Some of the reasons for the increase in poverty that will be discussed are (5 points):
1). Lack of family planning for women
2). Population growth
The next step pertaining to your social issue is to answer: What might be one important way in which the social issue is currently being addressed in society by finding a current event, news report, or contemporary example in social media.
Databases from our FTCC library can also help in this area to find an example:
– Issues & Controversies
– Opposing Viewpoints in Context
· II. A current event regarding the social issue of global poverty was found in the: ‘Issues and Controversies” FTCC database. (list the title of the article, or example in a brief statement you found in 2-3 sentences- you will get the chance to explain the example in detail in your paper) (25 points).
· III. List: Sociological concepts that will be included in the paper: Identify at least four concepts from our text relevant to your chosen social topic. (Remember here you will include any 3 concepts or theories from our text that relate to your social issue you will discuss in your paper- you can also use our study guide i.

Unit 3: Synthesis Project
You will be creating an AP Exam Synthesis Question. The Synthesis Question gives you several sources and asks you to combine (synthesize) them with your own thoughts to create a cohesive essay. This is the same goal as a research paper. Your question (prompt) and sources should be formatted, labeled, and presented as on the AP Lang Exam. This will be modeled after the ones in the sample packets you were given.
Source Requirements:
· 8 sources
· No sources older than 10 years
· At least two sources published within the last two years (2020, 2021, 2022)
· Provide 1-2 sources that are images (political cartoons, graphs, charts, etc.)
· Sources should demonstrate a range of positions and approaches to the topic. Your goal is to figure out what 2-3 of the main “sides” are in the debate around the issue and represent those sides fairly.
Research Resources:
· Use this
link to access academic databases through CPS and Lane.
Example topics:
· Security vs Privacy: Personal Rights
· Standardized Education Movement
· Parenting Styles of the 21st Century
· Why Movements Matter: Voices of the People
· Technology’s Impact on American Families
Project Requirements:
Include, neatly formatted in one document
· Prompt page with directions, introduction, and assignment
· 6 sources
·
MLA citation of each source
· 3 potential thesis statements for this essay
a. One that is open
b. One that is closed
c. One that is a counter argument thesis.
· Choose one thesis statement, and create an outline of a response to ensure that others can synthesize these sources.
The most effective Synthesis Prompts give the test-takers a wide variety of sources to consider. These sources are of various types, lengths, and opinions. This diversity allows each test-taker to choose their own individual approach to the assignment while providing them with the tools to adequately synthesize into their paper.
You are going to choose EIGHT sources specific to your assigned topic. This will ensure that your group will be providing sources that show the complexity of the issue.
Therefore, when choosing your sources, keep several guidelines in mind:
1. Choose sources that cover a variety of viewpoints on your assigned topic, making sure to keep the sides evenly represented.
2. Choose sources from a wide variety of locations and formats. Use the list below as guidance; it is certainly not all-inclusive. Requirements are in CAPITAL letters. Beyond those required types, you may choose the rest of your sources at your discretion.

Writing Assignment 1 and 2
This document contains important information regarding the Writing Assignment 1 and
Writing Assignment 2. The papers will be submitted through the “Assignments” area of
the classroom (upload the paper as a Word document and submit). Please contact me
immediately if you are unclear about these requirements.
The purpose of this assignment is to choose three important people or events in American
history through the readings of weeks 1-4 (writing assignment 1) or weeks 5-8 (writing
assignment 2.) You have some flexibility with this assignment. For example, you can
write about three important acts that the British imposed which caused the colonists to
seek independence against the mother country. Or, you could write about three important
events during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Contact your instructor if you need
guidance regarding a topic.
The assignment asks you to find a minimum of two academically credible sources (one
may be your textbook), develop a clear, focused thesis statement, and to support your
thesis with clear, insightful, consistent writing. This assignment will enhance your
research and writing skills, both of which are applicable not only to this course but to
many different careers.
You may include your own opinions and ideas as long as they reflect a solid
understanding of the reading material. For example, if you write about the presidency of
Thomas Jefferson, feel free to include your opinion as to how his ideas made the country
stronger, freer, or more prosperous, but your primary focus should be an analysis of the
factual information that you have utilized to support your thesis and main ideas.
Your ideas must be supported by information from your sources since you are using these
sources to prove your thesis. After all, the purpose of a research paper is to make a case
and to convince the reader that your writing and research supports your thesis. Whether
you quote information directly from your sources, or paraphrase, you must cite your
sources generously to give credit to the sources and to avoid plagiarism.
You may utilize one of two citation methods in your essay (depending on which method
you are most familiar): MLA or Chicago/Turabian. Your instructor will post links to web
sites that contain more specific information about utilizing these methods.
Your paper must contain a cover page, an introduction paragraph, three body paragraphs
(one paragraph for each of your three people/events) and a conclusion paragraph. The
paper length is about 3 pages, double-spaced. A separate document in the Resources
section of the classroom is a sample student essay. Please refer to this document to get a
visual representation of what your essay should look like.

Project Media Essay
Monsters are not just the fictional creatures that live in swamps and under beds. Sometimes
monsters are real. Furthermore, what some consider to be a monster may or may not be seen as
monstrous to everyone. For this assignment you will need to think about how the media depicts
individuals. Find someone (politician, athlete, actor, etc.) who you believe to be a “good” person
and explain how the media has misrepresented this individual as monstrous, deviant, evil, etc.
OR you can choose someone who you believe is a real-life monster and explain how the media
has misrepresented this person as heroic, important, moral, etc. Explain what the media has said
about this person, and why you think this depiction is inaccurate or unfair. Your purpose is to set
the record straight about this person.
You will need to choose at least three sources from the media (newspaper, TV, radio, podcasts,
political cartoons, etc.) to use as examples of how this person has been represented to the public.
Each source should be a different genre (do not choose sources that are all the same kind of text).
You should choose sources that are contemporary (from the last 20 years or so). You may need to
use more than the three required texts in order to provide evidence to disprove the media's
general opinion of this person.
Proposal:
Your proposal is an opportunity for you to clearly and concisely state what you will argue in your
essay. You must use the future verb tense “I WILL argue,” to show that these are ideas you plan
on exploring further in your essay. State what others have said about this person; you may or
may not want to name your naysayers. Then explain what your argument about this person is and
how it differs from the depiction that the media has displayed. Typed, MLA format, 300 words.
Annotated Bibliography:
For this assignment you will need to do research on your individual and create an annotated
bibliography. Form a few research questions that will guide your search; consider what you
already know and what you do not know about this person. What are some of the viewpoints that
different media sources have about this person? You will choose three sources of any kind (radio,

provided with a sample annotated bibliography. For each source, you will need to include:

Individual Rights and the Obligations of Government
Prepare:
Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read chapters 8, 9, and 10 in
American Government
and watch the video,
Episode II - It’s a Free Country
.
Reflect:
Our political system is characterized by certain fundamental features to include a system of laws, rights, and liberties. The laws, created and supported by the Constitutional framework, are designed to protect and secure the rights and liberties of individuals and groups throughout the U.S. However, the government also has an obligation to provide for the security of its citizens from serious internal and external threats that could cause grave or severe damage to our country. The need for homeland and national security can create a dilemma where conflicts emerge between these security needs and the demands for civil rights and liberties.
Write:
In your initial post, explain what obligations the U.S. government has towards its citizens and how can these obligations impact individual and group rights? Provide real-world examples to support your explanation. Fully respond to all parts of the prompt and write your response in your own words. Your initial response must be 200 to 250 words. Support your position with APA citations to two or more of the assigned resources required for this discussion. Please be sure that you demonstrate understanding of these resources, integrate them into your argument, and cite them properly.
Respond to Peers:
By Day 7, respond to at least two of your classmates' initial posts. Your peer responses should be 75 to 100 words each. As your reply to your classmates, attempt to take the conversation further by examining their claims or arguments in more depth or responding to the posts that they make to you. Keep the discussion on target and try to analyze things in as much detail as you can. For instance, you might consider if your classmate’s arguments are well supported with valid sources and logically argued.
Week Four Reflection
Prepare:
Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read chapters 8, 9, and 10 in
American Government
, watch the video,
Episode II - It’s a Free Country
, and review your results from the Political Typology Quiz.
Reflect:
Political parties mobilize voters to win elections and implement policy goals. Parties use their stated policy goals (i.e., their platforms) as a way to mobilize voter support. Generally, in order to be successful in a two-party system, parties must have policy goals across a broad range of issue areas to appeal to a broad range of voters.

English 101Essay Assignment 7: Argumentative Essay
Topic and Structure:
Argumentative Essay – Choose one of two topics provided in these instructions to develop an argumentative essay. You must choose one of the topics listed, or your submission will not be graded.
Option #1: Does Technology Promote Loneliness?
Develop a thesis statement built upon whether or not technology promotes loneliness. You should focus on either one form of hardware or one type of software. For example, you could target cell phones or laptops. If you want to look more into software, you could narrow your discussions to one type of social media or one gaming app. These are just a handful of a vast array of options you could choose.
Develop at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource can assist you in developing the counterargument and refutation). This organization should yield four body paragraphs. Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. The beginning of a sample topic sentence might be, “First, Facebook does not promote loneliness because….” Then, be sure to support that claim with a point or two of researched data, followed by mostly original material that helps to explain how your research supports your claims as well as provides new insights and perspectives. Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that synthesizes the paragraph’s main ideas.
Sample Thesis Statement: Social media, particularly Facebook, does not promote loneliness because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument focus). *Note that a thorough thesis statement will include the counterargument in addition to your own arguments, but be sure to frame your counterargument as the opposition’s opinion so that readers do not think that you are changing your stance.
See The Top Ten Tips for College-Level Writing (Presentation) for more thesis statement assistance.
Use at least three credible sources (the author should be considered an expert on the topic in which he or she writes), such as books, articles, and websites, to support your claims. Include a mix of cited paraphrases, summaries, and quotes in your argumentative research paper. Use MLA format (Tip: You will find useful MLA resources within the course topics, particularly in Topic 9) to create proper parenthetical citations as well as a Works Cited page at the end of your essay. For additional Works Cited assistance visit the OWL Purdue website and use the left navigation menu to locate the type of reference you need.
Option #2: Is Citizen Privacy or National Security More Important?
Develop a thesis statement focused on determining if citizen privacy or national security is more important. You can choose any country or region. Your chosen topic needs to be specific and might address a question like the ones you see in these examples.

Assignment 3 EN 101: This week’s assignment is intended to help get you started on the persuasive essay we will be working on throughout the remainder of this course. Before getting started on this assignment, it might be beneficial for you to read the criteria for the Week Six Persuasive Essay.
For this week, we will be practicing topic selection and outlining. Because this is preparation for next week’s persuasive essay, you will need to start by picking a topic that is persuasive. This topic must meet the following criteria:
Arguable (are there at least two logical, yet opposite ways to look at the issue? Are there at least two sides?)
Solvable (i.e. avoid religious, moral, or politically charged topics)
Manageable (keep your topic focused and specific)
Think of a specific problem or issue that you are interested in researching and writing an essay about. This issue should be argumentative in nature, so the topic that you choose should have an equally valid opposing viewpoint.
An example of an appropriate topic would be this:
A specific community is debating an ordinance banning the ownership of pit bulls. Some residents agree that pit bulls should be banned, while others disagree with this position (there is plenty of research to back up either side of the argument).
Your job from there will be to explore the issue, look at both sides of the argument as completely as you can, and take a side. Your essay will be an attempt to convince others to join you in your decision.
Directions
Look up and read the following article in the EBSCOhost Database:
Step-by-step through the writing process. (2007). Writing, 30. 1-8.
(Note: You do not need to answer any of the questions from the reading in your assignment).
Read and respond to EACH of the following questions and submit them and your outline in a single document (both parts must be completed).
Part One: Topic Search
For the first part of this assignment, consider the following three questions:
What issue or problem would you like to write about?
Choose a side. What is your view on the issue? What is the opposing view?
What specific change might fix this issue?
Then, freewrite for 10-15 minutes about the topic you have chosen. Share all of the reas ...

Writing Assignment # 2
Due: Friday September 3rd, by 11:59 PM CST
Overview:
This Writing Assignment is broken down into two parts. Writing Assignment #1, which is due Friday August 27th and Writing Assignment #2, which is due Friday, September 3rd by 11:59 PM CST
The assignment now because requires some research into “strong sources.” Those sources that support your response will require footnotes and a bibliography to present you evidence, in CHICAGO MANUAL STYLE
The first part will not require it, but part two should have an attempt at citing your sources using Chicago Manual style. Instructions
In this week's lesson, you learned about the U.S. Census
Bureau's most recent racial and ethnic categories. For this
assignment, consider the racial and ethnic categories used in
the 2010 Census with the four racial, ethnic, and gender
categories used in the 1790 Census: Free white males, free
white females, all other free persons, slaves (Pew Research
Center, 2015). Analyze the concepts of race, ethnicity, and
gender as social constructs, just as sociologists do, by
addressing the following:
1. Explain how you might have been categorized by the
1790 Census and how you would have been
categorized by the 2010 Census.
2. Compare and contrast the two potential categorizations
and explain how this exercise shows that the concepts
of race, ethnicity, and even gender change over time.
Most importantly, explain how this exercise shows that
the concepts of race, ethnicity, and gender are social
constructs.
3. Determine and describe what ethnic, racial, and/or
gender categories, if any, would be best, in your view,
for the 2020 Census or the 2030 Census, to most
accurately show the diversity of the U.S. population.
What categories would be best to reveal the segments
of the U.S. population most vulnerable to racial, ethnic,
and/or gender inequalities or discrimination? What
categories could be listed in the 2020 Census or the
2030 Census that might best educate the U.S.
population on differences between race and ethnicity?
Explain your decisions.
Include headings for each of the three main sections of the
paper:

Each of the three main sections of your paper must contain
scholarly support in the form of quotes or paraphrases with
respective citations from assigned reading (the
textbook/lesson) and the outside scholarly source that you

Assignment 1 Dealing with Diversity in America from Reconstructi.docxbraycarissa250
Assignment 1: Dealing with Diversity in America from Reconstruction through the 1920s
For History 105: Dr. Stansbury’s classes (7 pages here)
Due Week 3 and worth 120 points. The formal deadline is on Monday morning at 9am Eastern Time; this is the next day after Week 3 ends. Watch announcements, emails, and postings for exact dates and any holiday notes that sometimes arise.
[NOTE ON ECREE: The university is adopting a tool called ecree for helping and doing writing assignments in many classes. In our History 105 class, we will be using the ecree program only for EXTRA CREDIT as a tool for doing work on your rough draft of the paper. We hope this approach encourages more rough drafting and revision work by students as well as makes students familiar with this useful new tool. For Assignment 1, in the Week 3 unit, you will see the link “EXTRA CREDIT: ROUGH DRAFT….”—that is where you can get up to 5 points of extra credit. Instructions will be posted there in the early days of the summer course. If you try this option, you will be able to use the file developed in ecree as a rough draft; you will then download that draft and edit it further. Then, once your paper is fully polished and finished as you see fit, you will then submit it at the next link in the Week 3 unit, which says “ASSIGNMENT 1: DEALING WITH DIVERSITY….”. ]
BACKGROUND FOR THE PAPER: This is a 5-paragraph paper based on research in designated sources. It is a position paper in which you support a thesis statement by reason and historical examples. After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. In the South, former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but, despite the Reconstruction period, faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Examine the two statements below and drawing from provided sources, present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position. [Don’t use this background paragraph in your paper]
Topic and Thesis Statement—choose one of the following as your Thesis Statement:
· THESIS STATEMENT 1: Political policies in the period from 1865 to the 1920s generally tried to promote diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few.
· THESIS STATEMENT 2: Political policies in the period from 1865 to the 1920s generally tried to hinder or restrict diversity and “the melting pot”, in part because of widespread prejudices.
· Plan to make that thesis statement the last s ...

TV, blog, political cartoon, etc.), but each source must be of a different kind. You will be
provided with a sample annotated bibliography. For each source, you will need to include:

source (50 words/entry), and a description of how you will use source (50 words/entry). You

Write:

English 101Essay Assignment 7 Argumentative EssayTopic an.docxkhanpaulita

Share all of the reas ...

assignment, consider the racial and ethnic categories used in
the 2010 Census with the four racial, ethnic, and gender
categories used in the 1790 Census: Free white males, free
white females, all other free persons, slaves (Pew Research

gender as social constructs, just as sociologists do, by
addressing the following:
1. Explain how you might have been categorized by the

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Unit V ProjectPortfolio Project 3The third portfolio entry re.docx
1. Unit V Project
Portfolio Project 3:
The third portfolio entry requires the construction of a
document that reflects the information you have learned in Unit
V.
The assignment will also test your ability to think critically
about the concepts within the unit. This portfolio entry should
be in one word document with proper headings for each section.
This project allows you to develop some interviewing skills,
generate tables, create a timeline, and write a debate. These
different mini projects allow you to think outside of the box of
the traditional assignment and assessment format, stretching
your academic capabilities and applying them to the sociology
discipline.
1. Ask five people how they would define racism, religion, and
family, and then summarize the definitions. Identify the
similarities and differences in the definitions. Provide your own
definitions of each and how they relate to each other.
a. You can use any means you want to interview people. Social
media (Facebook, Twitter,
etc.), email, or personal interviews are all acceptable.
2. Generate a table with a list of the different patterns of
interaction between minority and majority groups. The table
should have three columns:
a. One column for the models
b. One column providing three facts about each model
c. One column providing two different examples for each model
3. Develop a K-W-L table for each of the racial/ethnic groups in
the United States. Create three columns for each table with the
following categories: What I KNOW (K), what I WANT to
know (W), and what I LEARNED (L).
Complete the “K” and “W” sections, listing at least three things
you know and three things that you want to know about each of
the racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Then, perform
2. research on the different associated cultures, and list three
things you learned about the different cultures, and fill them in
the “L” section.
4. Create a timeline listing the different stages of family life.
Make note of any events, significant milestones, or problems
that may occur.
5. Argue both sides (supporting and rejecting) the following
statement in one to two paragraphs: The religions in the world
will never get along because they are too different.
Soc1010: Unit V Project
The third portfolio entry requires the construction of a
document that reflects the information you have learned in Unit
V. See the course syllabus for the assignment overview.
Important Note: This assignment is time consuming and a little
complex. It is more manageable if you break it down into parts.
Please do not hesitate to ask me questions about this
assignment. It is confusing and often students run into trouble
with this one! Also, see below. I have reduced the
requirements for the KWL table.
My Expectations & Clarification for this Assignment
3. This assignment is worth 100 points. There are 5
sections/questions for this assignment
IMPORTANT:You must answer all 5 questions for full credit.
Below I will explain how to complete the questions and provide
examples.
*Try to use APA formatting and cite any sources you use. Like
an assessment if you use the course text book or any outside
source in your project, please create an in-text citation and
reference list. However this project is unique in that it is
asking for tables and a survey so I am not going to be as strict
about the APA formatting. Each question gives specific
information about this. Citing any source used is required but if
you put the citation in the table or at the end of the table that is
OK.
Note: You can create one reference list at the end of the
project and not after each question.
Questions for Unit 5 Project
4. Question 1:
Ask five people how they would define racism, religion, and
family, and then summarize the definitions. Identify the
similarities and differences in the definitions. Provide your own
definitions of each and how they relate to each other.
Note: You can use any means you want to interview people.
Social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), email, or personal
interviews are all acceptable.
Expectations for Question 1:
(1) Ask 5 people and summarize each of their definitions of
ALL three terms (racism, religion, and family) You may also
discuss how you conducted your survey.
(2) You should write a few sentences/paragraph about the
differences and similarities found among those you surveyed.
(3) You should provide your own definition for the three terms
and discuss how they compare to those you surveyed. (Did you
have the same views? Different views? Why might that be?)
Question 2: Generate a table with a list of the different
patterns of interaction between minority and majority groups.
The table should have three columns. (A) One column for the
models. (B) One column providing three facts about each
model. (C) One column providing two different examples for
each model.
5. Important Note: See page 310-311 of the text for the list of the
4 different patterns of interaction. You will use the information
from these pages to fill in the table. You can also use other
resources just make sure you cite them correctly.
Expectations for Question 2:
(1) Have a column that contains (names) all 4 models of the
patterns of Majority and Minority interaction
(2) Have a column that contains three facts about each model
(3) Have a column providing two different examples for each
model
Below are some very basic examples. You can create your table
or columns however you wish as long as all the information is
there. I inserted a basic 5 by 3 column table.
(A)Model
Model 1 (Name)
Model 2
Model 3
Model 4
(B) Facts
Fact 1, Fact 2, Fact 3
(C) Examples
Example 1
Example 2
6. Here is another sample for question 2: I have filled in some of
it to show you some examples of what can be done.
Patterns of Interaction between Majority and Minority Groups
Pluralism
Assimilation
Segregation
Genocide
Facts
1.) Laws of the United States are Pluralist in nature.
2.) Fact 2 about pluralism.
3.) Fact 3 about pluralism
1)
“Assimilation involves changes in ethnicity but not race”.
(Macionis, 2011 pg 311).
2)Fact 2 about assimilation.
3.) Fact 3 about assimilation.
1.) Fact 1 about segregation
2.) Fact 2 about segregation.
3.) Fact 3 about segregation
1.) Fact 1 about genocide.
2) Fact 2 about genocide.
3.) Fact 3 about genocide.
Examples
1) In US, you can find a Mosque, a Korean Church and a Baptist
church
2) Example 2 of pluralism
1.) My grandparents assimilated into the US culture by learning
English and taking the oath of citizenship.
2.) Example 2 of assimilation.
7. 1.) An example of segregation
2) Example 2 of segregation
1.) Example of a genocide
2)Example two of genocide
Note: You can use the insert table capability found in word. It
really is easy! That would probably be the easiest way to do it
but not required. At the very least use the tabs/spaces to make
the table neat and understandable.
Note: Remember to create in-text citations if you paraphrase or
quote examples and ideas from the text book.
Question 3:
Develop a K-W-L table for each of the racial/ethnic groups in
the United States. Page 314 – 320 of the course text lists the 7
groups (Native American, White Anglo-Saxon, African
American, Asian American, Hispanic American, Arab
American, and White Ethnic).
Create three columns for each table with the following
categories: What I KNOW (K), what I WANT to know (W), and
what I LEARNED. I am reducing the requirement for this
question.
IMPORTANT: You can answer the question as written in the
8. syllabus or since there are so many groups to cover for this
question, I am going to allow you to just pick 3 ethnic groups
and create your table with 1 thing you know, 1 thing you want
to know, and 1 things you learned to earn full credit instead of 3
each for all 7 groups.
Below is an example K-W-L chart.
Race/Ethnicity
K (Know)
W (Want to Know)
L (Learned)
Hispanic
1. Hispanic population is increasing in America
1. Do Cuban Americans and Puerto Rican American’s have a
similar culture?
1. Mexican Americans originated in US lands (Macionis, 2011)
African American
Asian
9. Note: Remember to create in-text citations if you paraphrase or
quote examples and ideas from the text book. See my example
above.
Question 4: Create a timeline listing the different stages of
family life. Make note of any events, significant milestones, or
problems that may occur. See page 373 -376 of the text for
information on the different stages of family life. (1)
Courtship, (2) Settling In: Ideal vs Real Marriage, (3) Child
Rearing, (4) The Family Later in Life.
*Note: I am flexible about how you create the time line. It
isabout showing that you can discuss the different stages of
family life and you understand the milestones and issues that
arise during each stage. You can use tools in word/power point
to make a time line or you can make the information in a table
showing each stage. *If you have Microsoft Office 2010 or
newer– you can create a timeline using SmartArt. It is under
the Insert tab.
Note: Remember to create in-text citations if you paraphrase or
quote examples and ideas from the text book.
Expectations for Question 4
(1) Create a time line.
(2) Include all 4 stages of family life listed above in your time
10. line or table. List a couple events, milestones, or problems that
may occur within that particular family stage listed on your
time line.
(3) Use APA formatted in-text citations as needed
Question 5:
Argue both sides (supporting and rejecting) the following
statement in one to two paragraph short essay. The religions in
the world will never get along because they are too different.
So you would need to discuss both:
I agree that the religions in the world will never get along
because they are too different. (Provide your reasons why in
paragraph form).
I disagree that the religions in the world will never get along
because they are too different. (Provide your reasons why in
paragraph form).
Note: Even if you personally think for example that no matter
what religions will never get along, please provide some
reasons why others might be hopeful that they could get along.
Expectations for Question 5:
(1) Your response should be at least 150 words. It should be a
full paragraph or two.
(2) You must argue both sides (supporting and rejecting) to
receive full credit.
(3) If you use your text book or another source please create an
11. in-text citation and then place the cited work in your reference
list at the end of your project. It is OK if you do not use a
source for this question.
Grading:
The below grading rubric will be used to grade the assignment.
*Please note that content is worth a large portion of your grade
so it is important to create high quality content and to complete
all 5 questions. For example if the assignment is only half
completed – it would be considered as having “ limited content”
which means you could lose a lot of points.
