I like this product as there are lots of things about it that I am hoping to bring to my own product.
These images have been brought from the game Pokémon fire red where I am basing the visuals
of my game from. This game has a lot of things such as areas and sounds that I am wanting to
include to my game, for example in this game if you battle against a certain person are if you go
into a certain area of the map, there will be a different soundtrack. I also like the visuals. This
game was released in 2004 when top down games had started. I think that this still appeals to
Game freaks audience in the present 2020 as there audience is now more of the older generation
whom used to play the games at the begging. By keeping it in the top down angle then they keep
it more retro. The game has a creative spin from roaming in top down to battling in a third person
stance which makes you as the audience feel like you are more in the game and the fact that
there are characters and rivals that you can battle gives the sense competition and challenges.
As this game is aimed
originally for the younger
children they have used
bright colours and
animal/Pokémon that
don’t look scary as that
might scare some of their
audience. Finally Pokémon
has a large map which I
believe brings in more of
the audience as they have
a larger area that they can
roam.
Existing Product
This game is aimed for a older ranged audience. I feel that they have done this successfully by
adding certain things. Firstly they have used dark colours which shows that it is more evil and of a
dark genre of game. This will appeal to the audience more. They have also added enemy's which
are scarier looking which will motivate the audience to want to kill them. This game is full of
different weapons and armours that you can get, which allows the player to go off on side quests
to complete tasks to get more and loot to be able to get better and stronger equipment. This is
an online multiplayer game which will allow the audience to play with others and compete with
friends. They have use music which is more dark an intense to appeal to the audience as this is
more intense to get them into a gaming mood. I like the fact that they have clearly shown a
health bar on the screen which will indicate to the player if they are about to die or not. This
game offers the gamer multiple characters that they can play as allowing them to try different
characters and ability's to
see which they prefer.
Finally this game doesn’t
include lots of lit up areas.
This is a main thing that
appeals to the older
audience as it make it
more evil and dangerous
looking. They haven’t got
many soundtracks that are
played which is something
I would want to change
when I make my game.
Existing Product
Like the first game I looked at, this is more of a brighter and child friendly game. Firstly, the
audience for the game is roughly 7-15 years old. Compared to other top down games, this one is
more violent. The visuals is very retro and cartoony which will help to bring in the audience. The
game is brightly coloured to make it traditional to pixel art games. I like how the characters are
made to look with the 2D format as I feel like this also makes it traditional. As there is enemy's to
attack and that they can harm you, they have added a health bar that is easy to recognise to be
health. This makes it more child friendly for the audience as they will be able to understand what
that bar means and they will understand when their character is close to death. This game also
has the format of music changing depending on the section you are in and if you fighting a boss.
This also makes it clear for the younger audience that something different has changed. In the
right hand of the screen, the
game adds in 3 boxes which
allows the player to quickly
switch between objects.
This is something that I
could easily do for my
product to appeal to my
audience. Finally the game
involves little reward such
as the gold coins which will
make a competitive thing
for the audience to want to
get so that can buy things in
the games shop.

Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have?
– All of the products that I have looked at are all top down games.
– I find that they all are traditional in the sense of games and they
have a clear objective.
– They have music which corresponds to character or areas.
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your on work?
– In my product I will make multiple soundtracks to be played in
different sections and with different characters.
– I will also follow the top down view as that will be easier to
make
