Summary/ Main Characters:
This is the story of Farhan, Raju and Rancho who are engineering
students at the Imperial College of Engineering, one of the best colleges in
India. Farhan wants to become a wildlife photographer, but is pursuing an
engineering degree to fulfil his father's wish, whereas Raju needs to
improve his family's financial situation, and Rancho studies for the pleasure
of building machines. Rancho incurs the wrath of college's dean, Professor
Viru Sahastrabuddhe a.k.a. 'Virus' (Boman Irani), by giving creative and
unorthodox answers, and later blames the rote-learning mentality of the
institution for the suicide of fellow student Joy Lobo.
The three friends break into Virus' house so Rancho can propose his own
marriage to Pia, and then urinate on a door inside the compound. The next
day, Virus threatens to expel Raju, who, unable to choose between
betraying his friend and disappointing his family, attempts his own death.
Virus vows to make the course's final exam as hard as possible so that Raju
is unable to graduate. Pia, in reply, tells Rancho of the exam, and he and
Farhan steal the examination's questions for Raju who refuses to cheat.
Virus sentences them to expulsion; but they earn a reprieve when Virus’
pregnant elder daughter Mona (Mona Singh) goes into labor at the same
time.
A heavy storm and Pia instructs Rancho to deliver the baby in the college
common room via Voice over IP, after Rancho restores power using car
batteries and a power inverter invented by Rancho. After the baby is
apparently stillborn, Rancho resuscitates it; wherefore Virus allows them to
take and pass their final exams. Rancho comes first and is awarded Virus's
prize pen, retained hitherto for an especially-capable student. rancho went
missing after their graduation. Farhan and Raju race to locate Rancho, at
his last known address - little knowing the secret that was kept from them all
this time cuts electricity,

Issues in the movie:
• Peer pressure- influence from members of one's peer group.
• Teaching Strategies- refer to methods used to help students learn the
desired course contents and be able to develop achievable goals in the
future.
• Learning Standards- (also called academic standards, content standards
and curricula) are elements of declarative, procedural, schematic, and
strategic knowledge that, as a body, define the specific content of an
educational program.
Moral Values in the movie:
Rancho (Aamir Khan) who plays the role of funny yet brilliant college
adult has showed many lessons to learn through out the movie. I would like
to bring forward my favorite quotes and lessons learned from it:
Don't run behind the success: Don't run behind the success, achieve
excellence first, the success will automatically come looking for you.
Creativity: Be always creative in your answers, work & things you do which
helps you become more capable of your own.
Learning is everywhere: Learning isn't just about being inside a class
room and listening to teachers but its there everywhere. You just need to
grab and grow with it.
Do it with a passion: Are you passionate about what you are doing? then
its for you! You need to love what you do and that is when you can go get
greater things at ease.
Never Race: Don't ever race just because someone else doing it to achieve
something on a timeline. Always try to gain some knowledge and expertise.
Say "All is well": Probably most popular chant words of the year 2009 in India.
Rancho's core mantra of chanting the words to help himself and friends to get rid of the
fear. He says "This will not solve all problems but will surely give guts to face them".
Ignore others: There are naysayers, jealous, stupid, hatred people around us. Ignore
them and move on. Remember? "If you stop and throw a stone at every dog that barks,
you will never reach your destination".
Take a risk: Challenge yourself and take a risk to do something. The worst thing that will
ever happen is "failure", if so, switch over.
Anil Desai
INSIGHTS
To the school and Teachers:
This movie shows how great the impact is a
school, instructor or a teacher, environment, and the
status of a student, brings to his or her learning.
As I watched the movie I realized that indeed,
a school is consists of different learners with diverse
life experiences and family background. In recognition
to these facts, a teacher must have to use a variety of
teaching techniques/ styles in order to cater the needs
of the learners. But before a teacher can formulate his
or her objectives and methods, he or she should apply
assessment or even background checking of the
students, for him or her to understand them more.
As teachers we should not limit ourselves to
the philosophy of giving high standards to our learners;
because it adds pressure to them resulting to short-
term learning. We can implant life-long learning to our
students by submerging fun and joy to the process. In
addition, it was emphasized that personal values and
beliefs of a teacher aren’t to be forced to the learners,
wanting them to believe you and be like you; we are to
guide them and influence them by our actions not just
by words. Hence this should not affect the grading
system of a school.
To the Learners:
I have pondered that learners are influential
just as they are easily influenced by their peers at
school, at home and anywhere they may be. Just like
how Rancho (the main character) made his friends a
better person and life-centered; and how he imparted
to them a good lesson in life.
As learners, we should not be afraid to
follow what we want in life. We should be firm
in choosing the track we want to go to. We
are the main character of our own story, and
we are the ones who’ll live in it. Though there
are times that we should adhere to our
parents’ advice, we should also give time for
us to hear ourselves; to determine where we
can find joy and satisfaction in learning.
Poverty isn’t a hindrance to success; defeat it
with determination and perseverance. Don’t
ever think that you can’t learn just like how
others can, for if they can you can as well. In
education, there is no such thing as slow or
fast learner. It is a matter of how long do you
want to learn and learn new things and digest
it by applying to the real life situation.
About Life:
Professor Virus’ motto in life says “Life is a
race..”
Do you believe in that?
I have come to realize that we should not live to
compete. We should live to live. Life is wonderful for
us to add pressure to it. Just enjoy life and take it
easy. Learning is a life-long process, so do not think
that if you don’t run as fast as how they do, you will
be left behind. Success in life is not determined who
gets first to the top, rather who survived and played it
well; who is happy on what they have achieved
compared to those who considered themselves
established but not truly happy.

  • 6. Issues in the movie: • Peer pressure- influence from members of one's peer group. • Teaching Strategies- refer to methods used to help students learn the desired course contents and be able to develop achievable goals in the future. • Learning Standards- (also called academic standards, content standards and curricula) are elements of declarative, procedural, schematic, and strategic knowledge that, as a body, define the specific content of an educational program.
  • 7. Moral Values in the movie: Rancho (Aamir Khan) who plays the role of funny yet brilliant college adult has showed many lessons to learn through out the movie. I would like to bring forward my favorite quotes and lessons learned from it: Don't run behind the success: Don't run behind the success, achieve excellence first, the success will automatically come looking for you. Creativity: Be always creative in your answers, work & things you do which helps you become more capable of your own.
  • 8. Learning is everywhere: Learning isn't just about being inside a class room and listening to teachers but its there everywhere. You just need to grab and grow with it. Do it with a passion: Are you passionate about what you are doing? then its for you! You need to love what you do and that is when you can go get greater things at ease. Never Race: Don't ever race just because someone else doing it to achieve something on a timeline. Always try to gain some knowledge and expertise.
  • 9. Say "All is well": Probably most popular chant words of the year 2009 in India. Rancho's core mantra of chanting the words to help himself and friends to get rid of the fear. He says "This will not solve all problems but will surely give guts to face them". Ignore others: There are naysayers, jealous, stupid, hatred people around us. Ignore them and move on. Remember? "If you stop and throw a stone at every dog that barks, you will never reach your destination". Take a risk: Challenge yourself and take a risk to do something. The worst thing that will ever happen is "failure", if so, switch over. Anil Desai
  • 10. INSIGHTS To the school and Teachers: This movie shows how great the impact is a school, instructor or a teacher, environment, and the status of a student, brings to his or her learning. As I watched the movie I realized that indeed, a school is consists of different learners with diverse life experiences and family background. In recognition to these facts, a teacher must have to use a variety of teaching techniques/ styles in order to cater the needs of the learners. But before a teacher can formulate his or her objectives and methods, he or she should apply assessment or even background checking of the students, for him or her to understand them more.
  • 11. As teachers we should not limit ourselves to the philosophy of giving high standards to our learners; because it adds pressure to them resulting to short- term learning. We can implant life-long learning to our students by submerging fun and joy to the process. In addition, it was emphasized that personal values and beliefs of a teacher aren’t to be forced to the learners, wanting them to believe you and be like you; we are to guide them and influence them by our actions not just by words. Hence this should not affect the grading system of a school. To the Learners: I have pondered that learners are influential just as they are easily influenced by their peers at school, at home and anywhere they may be. Just like how Rancho (the main character) made his friends a better person and life-centered; and how he imparted to them a good lesson in life.
  • 12. As learners, we should not be afraid to follow what we want in life. We should be firm in choosing the track we want to go to. We are the main character of our own story, and we are the ones who’ll live in it. Though there are times that we should adhere to our parents’ advice, we should also give time for us to hear ourselves; to determine where we can find joy and satisfaction in learning. Poverty isn’t a hindrance to success; defeat it with determination and perseverance. Don’t ever think that you can’t learn just like how others can, for if they can you can as well. In education, there is no such thing as slow or fast learner. It is a matter of how long do you want to learn and learn new things and digest it by applying to the real life situation.
  • 13. About Life: Professor Virus’ motto in life says “Life is a race..” Do you believe in that? I have come to realize that we should not live to compete. We should live to live. Life is wonderful for us to add pressure to it. Just enjoy life and take it easy. Learning is a life-long process, so do not think that if you don’t run as fast as how they do, you will be left behind. Success in life is not determined who gets first to the top, rather who survived and played it well; who is happy on what they have achieved compared to those who considered themselves established but not truly happy.
