2. Drawing general impression of individual on the basis of a single
characteristic. i.e. if someone is good at one dimension, he/she is
perceived to be good at other dimensions as well.
The halo effect is a type of cognitive bias in which our overall impression of a
person influences how we feel and think about his or her character.
Essentially, your overall impression of a person ("He is nice!") impacts your
evaluations of that person's specific traits ("He is also smart!").
3. As here we saw the teachers believed that Chatur is a bright student , scores
good marks and is obedient , they themselves assumed that he will deliver a
good speech on teachers day in pure Hindi despite Hindi not being his 1st
language. But it is proved to be wrong as Rancho just changed 2 words in his
speech which totally changed the meaning of the original speech and Chatur
makes a mockery out of himself. Here we see how one of his characteristics
made his teachers believe that he will be good in everything.
4. As we can recall that rancho was not a typical
bright student and every teacher looking at
him assumed that he just liked to have fun and
was not serious at all . In this scene as rancho is
sitting and smiling goofily and dressed shabbily
, the teacher assumes he is misbehaving and
asks him the meaning of machine and as the
professor already made a perception of him not
being serious totally disregards his simple
definition and accepts a crammed definition of
machine by chatur as it sounds more
appropriate. But in the end rancho gives back
the professor the taste of his own medicine by
giving a crammed definition of book which the
professor himself couldn’t understand.
In the classroom, teachers are subject to the halo effect rating error when evaluating their students. For
example, a teacher who sees a well-behaved student might tend to assume this student is also bright,
diligent, and engaged before that teacher has objectively evaluated the student's capacity in these areas.
When these types of halo effects occur, they can affect students' approval ratings in certain areas of
functioning
5. Stereotypes are assumptions made about a group of people and are applied to
individuals, irrespective of their personal characteristics, because of their
affiliation with a certain group. Stereotypes can be positive, negative or neutral.
While both positive and negative stereotypes can be harmful, they can
occasionally serve as a learning experience.
Many common stereotypes are
derogatory, in that they're based
on negative references to a
person's ethnicity and race, age,
gender, politics, certain group or
sexual orientation.
6. The movie plays with a lot of stereotypes in a different ways mostly as a satire on stereotypes
Here when piya’s sister is asked by rancho what is the gender
she simply replies “a doctor is coming” to which he says “how
do you know your baby is going to be a docter to which she
says “an astrologer said she is going to be a girl so she has to
be a doctor”. This was an old stereotype that the best
profession for a girl is doctor and a boy is engineer.
For eg – in dangal girls are initially not considered by their
father to be apt for wrestling because of the stereotype that
girls are weak in these kind of things.
The general motto of the movie is to debunk the
stereotype that engineering or education in
general is hard and boring, rather it tries to
convey that the education system makes it hard
but if you are passionate and interested in it then
becomes easy and fun.
7. It also plays with the stereotype that a highly
educated rich NRI is always materialistic and only
cares about his reputation . Like in this scene he is
just concerned that Priya should wear a watch that
would match their reputation instead of caring
about her mothers watch. Also he mentions the
price of everything he owns to show how rich he
is.
This scene also in a sarcastic way shows and
displays the various stereotypes attached to a
typical poor family in India. An ill father, a
working mother who is always complaing , an
unmarried sister and all the responsibility is put
upon the son of the family.
8. Individuals’ attribution of their own feelings, attitudes and perception to
others. Individuals can project their fears, hatreds, anxieties, and resentments
onto others whom they view as less powerful - scapegoating
9. Rancho is a positive, honest , self loving guy. He does things he
likes and genuinely cares about and doesn’t let other people
influence his way of doing things and living life. He has a life
mantra” ALL IS WELL” which he preaches to everyone and
projects his positive outlook on life through it to everyone. Both
of this friends eventually take onto this projection and start
living life on their own terms.
Chatur is a guy who thinks that everyone is like him and
projects his insecurities, discomfort, anxiety, shortcomings
on others thinking they are feeling the same. Like during
exams he probably would get distracted by magazines so to
distract others sneaks in magazines in their rooms. He feels
that cramming is only way to get good marks in exams so
thinks everyone does that but he gets frustrated seeing
rancho comes 1st without it. So out of jealousy he doesn’t
leave a single chance to insult and disregard rancho’s
efforts. He is so full of himself that he doesn’t check the
speech he wrote thinking that he will be able to do it
anyways.
10. In this scene we see that irrespective of Raju
getting very bad grades in his exams was able to
get the job . It was because he projected his
honesty and positive attitude to the interviewer's
and making them feel that he is a perfect
candidate for the job irrespective of him being
devoid of the main criteria of selection that is
grades.
Mr Viru is so frustrated with rancho who is defying his
way and system of education and also exceling in his
studies that he wants him out of the college and
projects his frustration onto Raju by putting him into a
dilemma about 2 most important things in life his i.e.
his career and his friend, which leads Raju to commit
suicide.
