2. Emigration to America
Most Icelanders lived close to
the sea. Many were used to seeing
foreign ships and meeting foreign
sailors.
In the 19th century it became
easier to travel to other countries
due to betters ships and frequent
sailings to and from Iceland.
In the years between 1870-1914
many Icelanders moved to
America looking for a better life
on the other side of the ocean.
Most people emigrated from
Northeast of Iceland were a
volcanic eruption made life more
difficult.

3. The first world
war
 Iceland was very important
during the world wars because
it is centrally located between
USA and Europe.
 The Allies got weapons from
USA so it was important to keep
the seaway safe.
 The British rule the sea around
Iceland during the wars. They
kept the Germans away.
 Iceland could only make
business with USA and Britain
during the wars.

4.  There were teens of thousands of
British and US soldiers in Iceland
during world war 2.
 Iceland was an importan habor
for the Allies during the war. Lot
of ships made a stop over in
Iceland when sailing between
Europe and USA.
 Great seabattles took place close
to Iceland between the Allies and
Germany.

5. Modernity in Iceland
 Iceland became modern in the first half of the 20th century.
 Through the centuries Icelanders had got water from streams and wells.
 In the first half of the 20th century Icelanders got water from waterworks.
 Instead of having to go out to fetch water people got running water indoors.

6. Geothermal heat in Iceland
 Icelanders began to use geothermal heat in
the first part of the 20th century.
 It was for example used to warm up houses
and swimming pools.
 It became widely used after second world
war.

7. Swimming pools everywhere
 Swimming became a national sport in the 20th century when swimming pools
appeared all around the country.
 The hot tubs where particularly popular for relaxing and meeting other
people for a chat.

 Today water is not only important for daily life but as well a popular travel
attraction.
