The establishment of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation
❖ 1999 Creation of the Gran Canaria Group and its
Gran Canaria Declaration.
❖ 2000 Decision at CBD COP-5 to consider the
launch of a Global Strategy for Plant
Conservation at COP-6.
❖ 2002 Adoption of the GSPC at COP-6 marking
the first adoption of targets for plant conservation
by the international community.
❖ 2009 Review of progress that had been made
❖ 2010 GSPC updated COP10, for 2011–2020 with
a decision that implementation should be pursued
as part of the broader framework of the Strategic
Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020
Key achievements of the GSPC
● Mobilised the plant conservation community
● National responses by a number of countries (including mega-diverse
countries)
● Framework for action with clear, easily understood, quantifiable
targets
● Global targets as a guide for national targets – but flexibility at
national level
● Stimulated action at both global and national levels
● Botanic gardens and arboreta as key players
● Established in 2004
● C.70 national and international
partners
● Included in the GSPC flexible
coordination mechanism
● GPPC Conference in South Africa
and GSPC Liaison Group
meeting, 2018
● Requested by COP15 to assist in
an update for the post-2020
period.
Global Partnership for Plant Conservation
Liaison Group on the Global
Strategy for Plant Conservation
● Meetings of liaison groups: Liaison groups are
convened as necessary according to established
procedures.
Since 2004, (Decision VII/10), the
mechanism serves to facilitate and promote
implementation, and monitoring,
at all levels (national, regional and global),
It currently comprises four elements:
➢ # Experts
➢ # National GSPC focal points
# Global Partnership for Plant
Conservation
# CBD Secretariat.
National GSPC Focal
Points
National focal points, as
determined by Parties, are
listed here.
In decision VII/10, the Conference of the
Parties encouraged Parties to nominate focal
points for the Global Strategy for Plant
Conservation, or designate them from
among existing focal points
Draft guidance for national focal points for
the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation
The Liaison Group on the Global Strategy for
Plant Conservation called for additional
guidance to GSPC focal points to facilitate their
work. The Executive Secretary prepared a draft,
which is accessible here:
