2014 PV Performance Modeling Workshop: Results from Flash Testing at Multiple Irradiance and Temperatures across Five Photovoltaic Testing Labs: Junaid Fatehi, Yingli Green Energy Americas
This document discusses outdoor module characterization methods used to generate power matrices and correct for angle of incidence and spectral mismatch effects. It presents three outdoor methods for generating power matrices: 1) an automated two-axis tracker method used by TUV Rheinland PTL, 2) a manual two-axis tracker with mesh screens method also used by TUV, and 3) a method using fixed tilt modules or grid-tied arrays. It also examines the effects of angle of incidence on clean and soiled modules, and how to calculate and minimize spectral mismatch error for outdoor characterization methods.
This document discusses challenges and solutions for measuring the performance of vortex generators on wind turbines. It outlines two methods for assessing performance: 1) comparing power curves with and without vortex generators, and 2) comparing the active power relationship between a test turbine using vortex generators and a control turbine. The analysis seeks to closely match the inflow conditions for test and control periods to isolate the effects of the vortex generators while accounting for seasonal and turbulence intensity variations. Preliminary results suggest a potential 1-2% increase in energy capture with vortex generators.

Development of a solar PV energy assessment tool for EG-Audit Ltd.Daniel Owen
This document outlines the development of a solar PV energy assessment tool for EG-Audit Ltd. The tool aims to provide wholly transparent and accurate assessments by considering actual electricity usage behaviors and solar generation factors for different property types. Analysis found the tool predicted higher average lifetime profits than alternative calculators due to using actual export ratios between 5.5-21.6% rather than the common assumption of 50%. Upon reviewing results for six case studies, the tool can help identify usage trends and potential PV system optimizations.

The document discusses the Centre for Energy Studies (CES) in Nepal and its work related to cookstove testing and development. CES was established in 2003 by the Government of Nepal to conduct research, expert consultation, and testing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and energy planning. It has laboratories for cookstove and fuel testing, and has been involved in various cookstove design projects through student theses and research. CES uses standard testing methods like water boiling tests and measures stove thermal efficiency. It aims to provide national standards for fuel calorific values and help harmonize cookstove testing data in Nepal.
The Centre for Energy and Environment Nepal (CEEN) has experience testing briquette fueled stoves in their laboratory using a modified water boiling test methodology, evaluating metrics like combustion efficiency and emissions. CEEN provides these testing services to support student research, briquette entrepreneurs, and stove manufacturers, but notes there is no standardized methodology for testing briquette stoves and issues around researcher safety.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
