STANDARD COMPETENCY Students understand the notion of academic wiriting, identify the tone of academic writing, rethorical organization of wrting and also aplly these skills in writing academic discourse.
BASIC COMPETENCY Students are able to organize a good paragraph.

LEARNING ACTIVITY 1. Paragraph Structure 2. Unity and Coherence 3. Handwritten  4. Writing on a computer 5. How to write a title 6. Writing topic sentences 7. Writing concluding sentence
WHAT IS PARAGRAPH? A paragraphis a collection of relatedsentencesdealingwith a single topic. The Basic Rule: KeepOne Idea toOneParagraph Thebasic rule of thumbwithparagraphingistokeepone idea tooneparagraph. Ifyoubegintotransitioninto a new idea, itbelongs in a new paragraph.
1. PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE A.  Thetopicsentence B.  Supportingsentences C.  TheConcludingsentence
TOPIC SENTENCE A topicsentenceis a sentencethatindicates in a general waywhat idea orthesistheparagraphisgoingtodealwith.  In aneasywaytomakesureyourreaderunderstandsthetopic of theparagraphistoputyourtopicsentencenearthebeginning of theparagraph. (Thisis a good general rule forlessexperiencedwriters, althoughitisnottheonlywayto do it).
SUPPORTING SENTENCE Thetopic (whichisintroducedbythetopicsentence) should be discussedfully and adequately. Again, thisvariesfromparagraphtoparagraph, dependingontheauthor'spurpose, butwritersshouldbeware of paragraphsthatonlyhavetwoorthreesentences. It's a prettygoodbetthattheparagraphisnotfullydevelopedifitisthat short.
CONCLUDING SENTENCE Conclusions are shorter sections of academic texts which usually serve two functions. The first is to summarise and bring together the main areas covered in the writing, which might be called "looking back"; and the second is to give a final comment or judgement on this. The final comment may also include making suggestions for improvement and speculating on future directions.

  • 6. WHAT IS PARAGRAPH? A paragraphis a collection of relatedsentencesdealingwith a single topic. The Basic Rule: KeepOne Idea toOneParagraph Thebasic rule of thumbwithparagraphingistokeepone idea tooneparagraph. Ifyoubegintotransitioninto a new idea, itbelongs in a new paragraph.

  • 8. TOPIC SENTENCE A topicsentenceis a sentencethatindicates in a general waywhat idea orthesistheparagraphisgoingtodealwith. (Thisis a good general rule forlessexperiencedwriters, althoughitisnottheonlywayto do it).

It's a prettygoodbetthattheparagraphisnotfullydevelopedifitisthat short.
  • 10. CONCLUDING SENTENCE Conclusions are shorter sections of academic texts which usually serve two functions. The first is to summarise and bring together the main areas covered in the writing, which might be called "looking back"; and the second is to give a final comment or judgement on this. The final comment may also include making suggestions for improvement and speculating on future directions.
