ALL ABOUT CONDITION
● There are four main types of
Conditional Sentences, depending
on the possibility of fulfillment:
Zero, First, Second and Third
Conditional.
SECOND CONDITIONAL
CONDITION: If+Past Simple
CONSEQUENCE: WOULD+infinitive without TO
We use SECOND CONDITIONAL to express an imaginary situation or to
talk about a hypothesis:
Ex./ If we lived in the Canary Islands, we would go to the beach in every
season.
(but we live somewhere else, we are imagining)
It is important to know that when we use the verb TO BE in the Condition,
we can use WERE for all person:
Ex./ If I were ill, I would stay in bed for a week.
THIRD CONDITIONAL
CONDITION: If+Past Perfect
CONSEQUENCE: WOULD+have+participle
● We use THIRD CONDITIONAL when we talk about a hypothetical
situation in the past.
● Ex./ If my computer hadn’t failed, I would have sent you an email.
● (but it was broken, so I couldn’t send you anything)
● We can use COULD or MIGHT instead of WOULD in 2nd and 3rd
Conditionals.
MIXED CONDITIONALS
YOU CAN ALSO MAKE A MIXTURE OF 2ND AND 3RD
CONDITIONALS WITH DIFFERENT SITUATIONS:
2ND+3RD: IF I HAD ENOUGH MONEY, I WOULDN’T HAVE
HAD TO TAKE TWO JOBS
3RD+2ND: IF I HADN’T OVERSLEPT AND MISSED THE
FLIGHT, I WOULDN’T BE WAITING FOR A NEW ONE
HERE
3rd Conditional Inversion
In formal style, we can start a conditional sentence
with HAD rather than IF:
Ex./ Had I known the truth, I wouldn’t have
accepted her friendship ( = If I had known the
truth…)
