Macrodontia refers to teeth that are abnormally large. There are three types: true generalized where all teeth are enlarged, related generalized where teeth are slightly larger in a smaller jaw, and localized where one or more teeth are large. Causes include facial hemihypertrophy, gigantism, and genetic factors. Clinically, macrodontia presents as teeth that are larger than normal which can lead to crowding, malocclusion, and tooth impaction. Radiographs clearly show the increased tooth size. Diagnosis is made by visual examination. Treatment may involve orthodontics or extraction of impacted teeth.
