Electromagnetic radiation is a wave that propagates through space or matter with oscillating electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to the direction of propagation. It is classified by frequency into types including radio waves, microwaves, terahertz radiation, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays, with radio waves having the longest wavelengths and gamma rays the shortest. A narrow band of frequencies within the electromagnetic spectrum, called the visible spectrum, can be detected by the eyes of organisms.
