Isaiah 11:1-3
There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of
Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The
Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of
wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel
and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear
of the LORD. His delight is in the fear of the LORD,
and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor
decide by the hearing of His ears;
- Is Jesse the father of David?
- Who is this branch? Is it Messiah?
- How is he going to judge?
Matthew 3:1-3
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the
wilderness of Judea, and saying, “Repent, for the
kingdom of heaven is at hand!” For this is he who
was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying: “The
voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘ Prepare the
way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.’”
- What was the message of John the Baptist?
- What did they have to repent from?
- What is repentance?
- How do they know that what they are doing is wrong?
- Was not Israel keeping and obeying
the Law and the Commandments?
- What did Abel believe?
- What did he come to God with?
- What convictions were in his heart?
If Abel brought
an animal
for the sacrifice…
- Does it mean he knew
he should be dead?
- Can repentance pay for our sin?
- Can death only satisfy the debt of sin?
- Is true repentance being in agreement with God?
- Was Cain
in agreement
with God?
- Who decides if you
are a sinner or not?
- What was the
message of John?
- Can we come to God
without repentance?
Matthew 3:4-6
Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a
leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts
and wild honey. Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the
region around the Jordan went out to him and were
baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
- What were the people looking for by coming to John?
- What did John do for them?
- Can the water baptism take away our sin?
- What promise did they have?
2 Chronicles 7:14
if My people who are called by My name will humble
themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from
their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and
will forgive their sin and heal their land.
- Is pride holding us back from God?
“God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6
- How do we seek the Face of God?
- What did the people went out to see?
Luke 7:24-28
When the messengers of John had departed, He
began to speak to the multitudes concerning John:
“What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A
reed shaken by the wind? But what did you go out to
see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed those
who are gorgeously appareled and live in luxury are
in kings’ courts. But what did you go out to see? A
prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
Luke 7:24-28
This is he of whom it is written: ‘Behold, I send My
messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your
way before You.’ For I say to you, among those born
of women there is not a greater prophet than John
the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of
God is greater than he.”.
- Was John greater than all the mighty prophets of old?
- How do we compare with those in the kingdom of God?
- How much do we know about this Kingdom?
- Did the spiritual leaders know what was happening?
Matthew 3:7-9
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and
Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them,
“Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the
wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of
repentance, and do not think to say to yourselves,
‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you
that God is able to raise up children to Abraham
from these stones.
- What were the Pharisees and Sadducees looking for?
- Is it enough to be a son of Abraham?
- Being a descendant or part of a religion can justify you?
Matthew 3:13-17
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to
be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him,
saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You
coming to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him,
“Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to
fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
When He had been baptized, Jesus came up
immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens
were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And
suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My
beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
- Did John know who Jesus was?
- Why did Jesus have to be baptized?
- Did He have sin?
- What righteousness is He fulfilling?
- What did God say about Jesus?
John 1:28-34
These things were done in Bethabara beyond the
Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John
saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The
Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This
is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is
preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not
know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel,
therefore I came baptizing with water.”
John 1:28-34
And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit
descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained
upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to
baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see
the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He
who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and
testified that this is the Son of God.”
- Who was born first, John or Jesus?
- Did John know who Jesus was?
- Why did John call Him the Lamb of God?
- Did he know what was going to happen?
- Could the sacrifice of animals take away
their sins or just remit them?
- How the sacrificial lamb had to be? Perfect
Matthew 4:1-2
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness
to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted
forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.
- Why did the Spirit lead Him into the wilderness?
- Could Jesus have gone by himself?
- What happened when Adam was tempted?
- If Jesus is God, Can God be tempted?
James 1:13
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted
by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor
does He Himself tempt anyone.
- In what condition did
Jesus get into the
wilderness?
- Was it as God or as a
man?
- What was God purpose
in testing Jesus?
Philippians 2:5-8
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ
Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not
consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made
Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a
bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men.
And being found in appearance as a man, He
humbled Himself and became obedient to the point
of death, even the death of the cross.
- Did Jesus have to face the temptations as a man?
- Why was he hungry?
- Is fasting a way to control the passions of our flesh?
Matthew 4:3-4
Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If
You are the Son of God, command that these stones
become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is
written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by
every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
- What condition presents the tempter to Jesus?
If You are the son of God …
- What was Jesus need?
Hunger
- What did Satan wants Jesus to do?
- Did he want Him to demonstrate who He was?
- What was wrong with a few pieces of bread?
- Or, did he want him to obey him?
- How Jesus defend Himself against the temptation?
- Where is it written?
Deuteronomy 8:3
- What would have happen if Jesus had obeyed Satan?
- Would He have been subject to his authority?
Matthew 4:5-7
Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set
Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him,
“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.
For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over
you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest
you dash your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to
him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the
LORD your God.’”
- Why is Satan now tempting Him with the written word?
- Does Satan know the scriptures?
- Where is it written?
Psalms 91:11
If Jesus had tried,
- Wouldn’t He be testing God and His Word?
- Did Jesus believe God?
- Was Satan leading Him to doubt the word of God?
Matthew 4:8-11
Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high
mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the
world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these
things I will give You if You will fall down and worship
me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan!
For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God,
and Him only you shall serve.’” Then the devil left Him,
and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.
- What contract is making Satan with Jesus?
- Why did he offer Him the kingdoms of the world?
- Do they belong to Satan?
- When were these kingdoms given to Satan?
Luke 4:6-7
And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will
give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered
to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if
You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
- Who gave them to him?
Adam
- How did Adam give the authority to Satan?
By not believing God
- Why is so important for Satan the worship of Jesus?
- Did Jesus know He was going to be king?
- Is this kingdom made out of riches or people?
- Was Satan offering Jesus the people? A shortcut?
- Who triumphs?
- Good or Evil?
The truth of God
vs.
the lie of the devil
- What is evil?
- Is it not a decision
against God?
- What is the difference between Adam and Jesus?
- Did Jesus believe God?
- Why did Adam make the wrong decision if his
circumstances were all perfect?
- Was it easy for Jesus to overcome the temptations ?
- How were His circumstances?
WHAT DID WE LEARN TODAY?
- God fulfills the promise of a deliverer for humankind.
- We must recognize our wrong before coming to God.
- Being religious won’t justify us before God,
but trusting in His provision and acting on His word.
- Jesus came to be the sacrificial Lamb of God
who takes away the sin of the world.
- The written Word of God is our only hope
against the temptations of the world.
