Genesis 25:19-23
This is the genealogy of Isaac, Abraham’s son. Abraham
begot Isaac. Isaac was forty years old when he took
Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of
Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian. Now Isaac
pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was
barren; and the LORD granted his plea, and Rebekah his
wife conceived. But the children struggled together
within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I like
this?” So she went to inquire of the LORD.

Genesis 25:19-23
And the LORD said to her: “Two nations are in your
womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body;
One people shall be stronger than the other, And the
older shall serve the younger.”

- Why did Isaac marry Rebekah?
- Whose daughter is she?

Genesis 24:24
So she said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel,
Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.”

- Were they mixing with the nations around them?
- What made them different from the rest of mankind?
- Were they holy? (separated)

- Why Isaac had to pray and
plead with God?
- Was it a coincidence that
Rebekah was also barren?

Genesis 25:24-26
So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth,
indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first
came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so
they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came
out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name
was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she
bore them.

- How long was Rebekah barren? (20 years)
- What is the meaning of their names?
Esau = Hairy - Jacob = the one that supplants
- How were their relations afterward?

Genesis 25:27-28
So the boys grew. And Esau was a skillful hunter, a man
of the field; but Jacob was a mild man, dwelling in tents.
And Isaac loved Esau because he ate of his game, but
Rebekah loved Jacob.

- What makes these twin
brothers different?
- Did the physical appearance
or personal skills make them
better or worse?
- What made them different?

Genesis 25:29-34
Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the
field, and he was weary. And Esau said to Jacob,
“Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am
weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom. But
Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.” And
Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this
birthright to me?” Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of
this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to
Jacob. And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils;
then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus
Esau despised his birthright.”

Romans 9:13
As it is written,
“Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”

- Why God hated Esau?
- Do we understand God’s plan for our life?
- Can we reject God without consequences?

Hebrews 12:16
lest there be any fornicator or profane person like
Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.
- Did God know what was going to happen?
- Was Esau’s fate already predestined?
- Did anyone influence Esau’s decision in selling his birthright?
- Did Isaac obey God?

Genesis 26:1-5
There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine
that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to
Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar. Then the
LORD appeared to him and said: “Do not go down to
Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you. Dwell in
this land, and I will be with you and bless you; for to you
and your descendants I give all these lands, and I will
perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your
father.

Genesis 26:1-5
And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars
of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these
lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall
be blessed; because Abraham obeyed My voice and
kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and
My laws.”

- What is Isaac decision in the face of famine?
- What did God tell him? Did the promises of God change?
- In whom is God thinking when He is giving the land?
- Does God have a plan for the nation of Israel?

Genesis 27:1-10
Now it came to pass, when Isaac was old and his eyes
were so dim that he could not see, that he called Esau
his older son and said to him, “My son.”
And he answered him, “Here I am.” Then he said,
“Behold now, I am old. I do not know the day of my
death. Now therefore, please take your weapons, your
quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt
game for me. And make me savory food, such as I love,
and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless
you before I die.”

Genesis 27:1-10
Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau
his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to
bring it. So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying,
“Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother,
saying, ‘Bring me game and make savory food for me,
that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the
LORD before my death.’

Genesis 27:1-10
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to
what I command you. Go now to the flock and bring me
from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make
savory food from them for your father, such as he loves.
Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it,
and that he may bless you before his death.”

- What is happening here?
- Is Rebekah trying to supplant the blessing?
- Why did she do it?
- Didn’t God revel to her what would happen?
- What did Jacob do?

Genesis 27:11-17
And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, Esau my
brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned
man. Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall
seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring a
curse on myself and not a blessing.” But his mother
said to him, “Let your curse be on me, my son; only
obey my voice, and go, get them for me.” And he
went and got them and brought them to his
mother, and his mother made savory food, such as
his father loved.

Genesis 27:11-17
Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son
Esau, which were with her in the house, and put
them on Jacob her younger son. And she put the
skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on
the smooth part of his neck. Then she gave the
savory food and the bread, which she had prepared,
into the hand of her son Jacob.

- Was Jacob afraid of the wrong outcome?
- What did his mother say to him?
- Did Jacob want the blessing?

Genesis 22:14-19
So he went to his father and said, “My father.” And
he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” Jacob
said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have
done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of
my game, that your soul may bless me.” But Isaac
said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so
quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the LORD
your God brought it to me.”

Genesis 22:14-19
Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may
feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau
or not.” So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and
he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but
the hands are the hands of Esau.” And he did not
recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his
brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. Then he
said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He said, “I am.”

Genesis 22:14-19
He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my
son’s game, so that my soul may bless you.” So he
brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought
him wine, and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to
him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.” And he
came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell
of his clothing, and blessed him and said: “Surely, the
smell of my son is like the smell of a field which the
LORD has blessed.

Genesis 22:14-19
Therefore may God give you of the dew of heaven,
of the fatness of the earth, and plenty of grain and
wine. Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down
to you. Be master over your brethren, and let your
mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone
who curses you, and blessed be those who bless
you!”

- How was Rebekah’s character??
- Was she trying to help God in His prophesy?
- Was it the right way? - Does God need help?
- Was Isaac a man of Faith?

Genesis 27:41-46
Now it happened, as soon as Isaac had finished
blessing Jacob, and Jacob had scarcely gone out from
the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother
came in from his hunting. He also had made savory
food, and brought it to his father, and said to his
father, “Let my father arise and eat of his son’s game,
that your soul may bless me.” And his father Isaac said
to him, “Who are you?” So he said, “I am your son,
your firstborn, Esau.”

Genesis 27:41-46
Then Isaac trembled exceedingly, and said, “Who?
Where is the one who hunted game and brought it to
me? I ate all of it before you came, and I have blessed
him—and indeed he shall be blessed.” When Esau
heard the words of his father, he cried with an
exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father,
“Bless me—me also, O my father!” But he said, “Your
brother came with deceit and has taken away your
blessing.”

Genesis 27:41-46
And Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he
has supplanted me these two times. He took away my
birthright, and now look, he has taken away my
blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a
blessing for me?” Then Isaac answered and said to
Esau, “Indeed I have made him your master, and all his
brethren I have given to him as servants; with grain
and wine I have sustained him. What shall I do now for
you, my son?”

Genesis 27:41-46
And Esau said to his father, “Have you only one
blessing, my father? Bless me—me also, O my father!”
And Esau lifted up his voice and wept. Then Isaac his
father answered and said to him: “Behold, your
dwelling shall be of the fatness of the earth, and of the
dew of heaven from above. By your sword you shall
live, and you shall serve your brother; And it shall
come to pass, when you become restless, that you
shall break his yoke from your neck.”

- Was Esau aware of his mother intentions??
- Who was deceived? Esau or Isaac?
- Is the birthright now important for Esau?
- Can we separate the blessing from the birthright?
- How did Esau feel after this treachery?

Genesis 27:41-46
So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with
which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his
heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at
hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.” And the
words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah.
So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and
said to him, “Surely your brother Esau comforts
himself concerning you by intending to kill you.

Genesis 27:41-46
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to
my brother Laban in Haran. And stay with him a few
days, until your brother’s fury turns away, until your
brother’s anger turns away from you, and he forgets
what you have done to him; then I will send and
bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved
also of you both in one day?”

Genesis 27:41-46
And Rebekah said to Isaac, “I am weary of my life
because of the daughters of Heth; if Jacob takes a
wife of the daughters of Heth, like these who are
the daughters of the land, what good will my life be
to me?”.

- What was the outcome of this act?
- Is the murderous feeling among brothers right?
- Did Rebekah know what would happen?
- How much influence does a mother have on their children?
- Was God not able to fulfill His will?
- How was Rebekah going to protect his son Jacob?

Genesis 28:1-5
Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him, and
charged him, and said to him: “You shall not take a
wife from the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to
Padan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s
father; and take yourself a wife from there of the
daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.

Genesis 28:1-5
“May God Almighty bless you, and make you fruitful
and multiply you, that you may be an assembly of
peoples; And give you the blessing of Abraham, to
you and your descendants with you, that you may
inherit the land in which you are a stranger, which
God gave to Abraham.” So Isaac sent Jacob away,
and he went to Padan Aram, to Laban the son of
Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, the
mother of Jacob and Esau.

- Was Isaac instructing his son Jacob
to marry one of his cousins?
- Did God say not to mix themselves with other nations?
- How did Esau respond to Isaac’s demand on Jacob?

Galatians 28:6-9
Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him
away to Padan Aram to take himself a wife from
there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a
charge, saying, “You shall not take a wife from the
daughters of Canaan,” and that Jacob had obeyed his
father and his mother and had gone to Padan Aram.
Also Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan did not
please his father Isaac. So Esau went to Ishmael and
took Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s
son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife in addition
to the wives he had.

- Was Esau trying to make up
his marriage to women
of Canaan marrying
a relative?
- Was he trying to
please his father
marrying a
daughter of
Ishmael?

- Were Ishmael’s descendants in the genealogy of the promise?
- What happened to Jacob in his way to Padam Aram?

Genesis 28:10-17
Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went
toward Haran. So he came to a certain place and
stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And
he took one of the stones of that place and put it at
his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then
he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the
earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the
angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

Genesis 28:10-17
And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: “I am
the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God
of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you
and your descendants. Also your descendants shall
be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad
to the west and the east, to the north and the south;
and in you and in your seed all the families of the
earth shall be blessed.

Genesis 28:10-17
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever
you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will
not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to
you.” Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said,
“Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know
it.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this
place! This is none other than the house of God, and
this is the gate of heaven!”.

- What was Jacob understanding of this dream?
- What’s the meaning of a stair between earth and heaven?
- Was God confirming to Jacob the promise He made
to his father and grandfather?

- Did Jacob has faith?
- Did he have a righteous character?
- Was God determined to finish what He started?

- Why did God allow Jacob’s plans?
- Do men have free will?
- Why was Jacob afraid when he woke up?
- What did Jacob believe?

Genesis 28:20-22
Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with
me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give
me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I
come back to my father’s house in peace, then the
LORD shall be my God. And this stone which I have
set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You
give me I will surely give a tenth to You”.

- Why did Jacob bargain and set conditions before God?
- What is Jacob looking for? Is it material possessions?
- What is he offering God? Did God ask for a 10% return?
- What was God’s response?

God’s story continues with Jacob going into Laban’s
house and falling in love with his younger daughter
Raquel. For seven years he works for Laban to get
Raquel, but Jacob got deceived and got her older
sister Leah instead. Another 7 years he had to work
in order to get Raquel.
Looks like Jacob is reaping the fruit of his own
deception.

Galatians 6:7
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked;
for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.

Nevertheless, Jacob prospered abundantly
according to God’s fidelity and after twenty years
of service, he escaped from the house of Laban and
returned to the land of his father, where he still had
to face his brother Esau, whom he feared.
Again Jacob seeks God for protection
and struggles with Him.

Genesis 32:24-29
Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with
him until the breaking of day. Now when He saw that
He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket
of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of
joint as He wrestled with him. And He said, “Let Me
go, for the day breaks.”
But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless
me!” So He said to him, “What is your name?”

Genesis 32:24-29
He said, “Jacob.”
And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called
Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God
and with men, and have prevailed.”
Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I
pray.”
And He said, “Why is it that you ask about My
name?” And He blessed him there.

- Who was wrestling with Jacob and why?
- Did God agree with Jacob’s ways?
- What does the name Israel means?
(Prince of God)

- Was Jacob seeking God’s blessing to protect him
from his brother’s wrath?
- Did God extend His favor to Esau’s heart?
- How many children did Jacob have?

Genesis 29:31-32
When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He
opened her womb; but Rachel was barren. So Leah
conceived and bore a son, and she called his name
Reuben; for she said, “The LORD has surely looked on
my affliction. Now therefore, my husband will love
me.”

- Why did God choose Leah to be in the genealogy
of the Christ?
- Could Jacob’s love for Rachel influence
the promise of God?
- Does God knows what is in our hearts?

1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his
appearance or at his physical stature, because I have
refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees;
for man looks at the outward appearance, but the
LORD looks at the heart.”

- Is not God sovereign
In His choices?
- Could Jacob’s blessing
change God’s plan?
- What did God see
in Leah’s heart?
- Why God didn’t
choose the firstborn
of the children of Jacob?

1 Corinthians 1:27-29
But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to
put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak
things of the world to put to shame the things which
are mighty; and the base things of the world and the
things which are despised God has chosen, and the
things which are not, to bring to nothing the things
that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence.

- Why did God choose Jacob?
- Was he able or strong? Was he better than his brother?
- Is God faithful to His promises?
- How did Jacob’s family get along?
- What influence had Joseph over his other brothers?

Genesis 37:3-5
Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children,
because he was the son of his old age. Also he made
him a tunic of many colors.But when his brothers
saw that their father loved him more than all his
brothers, they hated him and could not speak
peaceably to him.
Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his
brothers; and they hated him even more.

- Was Joseph’s fault that his father love him
more than his brothers?
- Did Joseph make up the dream?
- Who gave it to him?
- What was the dream about?

Genesis 37:9-11
Then he dreamed still another dream and told it to
his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed
another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon,
and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”
So he told it to his father and his brothers; and his
father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this
dream that you have dreamed? Shall your mother
and I and your brothers indeed come to bow down to
the earth before you?”. And his brothers envied him,
but his father kept the matter in mind.

The dreams of greatness of Joseph and the envy of
his brothers drove them to sell him as a slave.
(thanks to Judah, otherwise he would have been killed)
He was taken to Egypt where he served Potiphar
and after being betrayed, he end up in jail.
It seems as reality was against all he dreamed.

But then, Joseph’s interpretation to Pharaoh's
dream made him the most powerful man on earth,
after the Pharaoh, during the seven years of famine
he predicted in his dream.
Jacob and his family were forced to buy food from
Egypt and they got reunited and lived in the land of
Goshen. Then Jacob blessed his sons and grandsons
and died.

WHAT DID WE LEARN TODAY?
- God looks at the heart of men
and is Sovereign in His decisions.
- God is faithful to His promises
and fulfills them regardless of our deficiencies.
- Sooner or Later, we will surely reap what we have sown
- The seed of the promise is the stair that connects
heaven and earth in Jacob’s dream.
- Israel has been blessed with abundance
and with being part of the genealogy of the promise.
