Help Your Child Read
When you and other family members read with your children, help
them with homework, talk with their teachers, and participate in
school or other learning activities, you give your children a
tremendous advantage. Most of the activities make learning
experiences out of the everyday routines in which you and your
children participate. Most use materials that are found in your home or that can be
had free-of-charge from your local library. The activities are designed to be fun for
both you and your children as you help them to gain the skills they need to
become readers.

       1. Take children's books and writing materials with you whenever you
leave home. This gives your child fun activities to entertain and occupy
him while traveling and going to the doctor's office or other
          appointments.

       2. Create a quiet, special place in your home for your child to read, write
and draw. Keep books and other reading materials where your child can
          easily reach them.

       3. Help your child see that reading is important. Set a good example for
your child by reading books, newspapers and magazines.

       4. Limit the amount and type of television you and your child watch. Better
yet, turn off the television and spend more time cuddling and reading
books with your child. The time and attention you give your child has
many benefits beyond helping him be ready for success in school.

       5. Reach out to libraries and community and faith-based organizations.
          These organizations can:
          • Help you find age-appropriate books to use at home with your child;
          • Show you creative ways to use books with your child and other tips to
            help her learn; and
          • Provide year-round children's reading and educational activities.

                                                                                                                                3
Cómo Ayudar a Su Hijo a Ser

                                                                                                                                4
Creating Bookmarks
Create bookmarks based on the characters of the books that you read. Illustrate
the bookmarks by drawing pictures based on the events in the story. You may
also cut pictures from magazines. Make sure to include quotes (words) from the
books too! When you finish, print this sheet on thick paper or card stock.

                                                                                  5
Collage/Scrapbook
Using the space below, create a collage or scrapbook for one of the books that you
read. You can use drawings or pictures from magazines to represent the following
ideas: characters, settings, and plot (action). You may also pretend that you are the
main character and create character collage describing your favorite foods, hobbies,
family and friends, favorite movies or songs, favorite books, and goals. Be sure to
include a picture or drawing of what you think the character looks like.

                                                                                        6
Movie Poster
Pretend one of the books you read has been made into a movie. On the space below,
create an attractive and exciting movie poster for your book. Include the title of the
book or movie, the name of the characters, and a brief 1-2 sentence summary of the
book.

                                                                                         7

  • 3. Help Your Child Read When you and other family members read with your children, help them with homework, talk with their teachers, and participate in school or other learning activities, you give your children a tremendous advantage. Most of the activities make learning experiences out of the everyday routines in which you and your children participate. Most use materials that are found in your home or that can be had free-of-charge from your local library. The activities are designed to be fun for both you and your children as you help them to gain the skills they need to become readers. 1. Take children's books and writing materials with you whenever you leave home. This gives your child fun activities to entertain and occupy him while traveling and going to the doctor's office or other appointments. 2. Create a quiet, special place in your home for your child to read, write and draw. Keep books and other reading materials where your child can easily reach them. 3. Help your child see that reading is important. Set a good example for your child by reading books, newspapers and magazines. 4. Limit the amount and type of television you and your child watch. Better yet, turn off the television and spend more time cuddling and reading books with your child. The time and attention you give your child has many benefits beyond helping him be ready for success in school. 5. Reach out to libraries and community and faith-based organizations. These organizations can: • Help you find age-appropriate books to use at home with your child; • Show you creative ways to use books with your child and other tips to help her learn; and • Provide year-round children's reading and educational activities. © U.S. Department of Education, Office of Communications and Outreach, Helping Your Child Become a Reader, Washington, D.C., 2005. 3
© U.S. Department of Education, Office of Communications and Outreach, Helping Your Child Become a Reader, Washington, D.C., 2005. 4
