This document discusses the impact of retrieval requirements on the design of radioactive waste repositories in Germany. By law, repositories must allow for the planned retrieval of radioactive waste containers during the operating period before final closure. The authors propose a "re-mining" strategy where sealed mine openings would be re-excavated to retrieve waste containers as required. They analyzed the operational processes, layout, equipment, and conditions expected during retrieval for two salt repository options - drift disposal of casks and borehole disposal of spent fuel canisters.
