Sandia National Laboratories investigated closure predictions of rooms at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant. Earlier simulations from 1987 under-predicted room closure by 4x. In 1989, adjustments were made to match experiments, including changing the equivalent stress and friction coefficients. The current study recreated earlier simulations and found predictions now match when resolving numerics. However, new laboratory-based salt calibrations under-predict closure by 3x. Several open questions remain regarding modeling details.
