Visual Imagination
CONTINUITY: The actual or suggested movement or
sequence of events in a composition.
Stated another way: continuity is the means by which our
senses (eye) move from focal point (visual moment)
to focal point. (If the composition is static, or has
a shared focus,)

OR
ACTUAL MOVEMENT:
If the composition is active the actual
focal point moves.
ACTUAL MOVEMENT:
This often creates complex focal patterns.
Such as in following a soccer game
ACTUAL MOVEMENT: Dancing on stage
Actual movement happens in real time:
EXAMPLE: An actor walking down
a staircase. Each step is a minor focal
point.

The actor’s movement and rate of
delivery influences the pace of the
production.
Suggested movement is
indication of movement
in an inanimate composition
such as a painting.
SUGGESTED MOVEMENT:
SUGGESTED MOVEMENT:
SUGGESTED MOVEMENT:
Sometimes a surface or a form compels the eye to follow its path.
There are 3 principal ways of attaining continuity:
1. REPETITION - The recurrent use of a visual element
(line, surface, color, or texture) or theme (subject
matter)
REPETITION is useful because:
1. It employs economy of invention
2. It attracts attention and becomes catchy.
3. It helps create regularity and unity
4. It can produce comic or tragic reactions

Repetition may be varied:
a. alternation - renews interest in each motif.
B. Inversion - renews appearance of a form without monotony.
B. RHYTHM - is a regular pulsation or continuous beat.
Continued rhythm without variety creates boredom or
monotony

Rhythm may be deliberate or understated.
Understated rhythm provides
a sense of flow.
Deliberate rhythm provides pace.
Or both pace and flow.
C. PROGRESSION: Rhythm anted upon by
A. structured time,
B. space,
C. size,
D. direction o
E. value.

or any combination of these
THERE ARE THREE COMMON TYPES OF PROGRESSION
1. ARITHMETIC (1) + 2 (3) +2 (5) +2 (7)
2. GEOMETRIC (1) x 3 (3) x3 (9) x3 (27)
3. ALGEBRAIC
EXPONENTIAL (1) x 3 (3) x 3 (9) x 9 (81)
