This document discusses using Amazon EC2 Spot Instances and Auto Scaling to build cost-effective, scalable applications. It provides examples of using Spot Fleet and Auto Scaling groups together to create worker fleets for batch processing jobs that scale based on job queue depth and scale down when not in use. It also discusses using Spot Instances on Amazon EMR for task nodes and HDFS instances to reduce costs for big data workloads. Finally, it shows an example of running stateless web servers on Spot Instances behind a load balancer for high availability at low cost.
Scaling Up to Your First 10 Million Users (ARC205-R1) - AWS re:Invent 2018Amazon Web Services
Cloud computing provides a number of advantages, such as the ability to scale your web application or website on demand. If you have a new web application and want to use cloud computing, you might be asking yourself, "Where do I start?" Join us in this session for best practices on scaling your resources from one to millions of users. We show you how to best combine different AWS services, how to make smarter decisions for architecting your application, and how to scale your infrastructure in the cloud.
A Deep Dive into What's New with Amazon EMR (ANT340-R1) - AWS re:Invent 2018Amazon Web Services
Amazon EMR is one of the largest Spark and Hadoop service providers in the world, enabling customers to run ETL, machine learning, real-time processing, data science, and low-latency SQL at petabyte scale. In this session, we introduce design patterns such as using Amazon S3 instead of HDFS, taking advantage of both long- and short-lived clusters, using notebooks, and other architectural best practices. We discuss lowering cost with Auto Scaling and Spot Instances, and security best practices for encryption and fine-grained access control. We showcase key improvements made to the service in 2017. We cover improvements in using the Amazon EMR API, best practices utilizing Spot instances and Spot Instances with Auto Scaling, improvements toward Amazon S3 performance on Amazon EMR, and security/authorization and authentication. We couple each of these with a demo or customer use case to illustrate the benefits. If you are an existing Amazon EMR user, you walk away with a thorough understanding of improvements made in 2018, and how they benefit you. If you are a new Amazon EMR user, get an understanding of common use cases and how other customers are using Amazon EMR.

"Microservices for Startups: Implementation Patterns with Amazon ECS" by Donnie Prakoso, AWS Technology Evangelist, ASEAN presented as part of Container Conference 2018
"Container technology provides unparalleled improvements in efficiency and agility of packaging and deploying applications, and hence are becoming the de-facto method for deploying microservices. However, using containers for running services at scale has required that operations team handle complex, dynamically changing infrastructure requirements, or run the risk or under/over-provisioning infrastructure. Let's explore together best practices for developing microservices with containers on AWS services while running them at scale."

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
