3. Definitions
Environmental Performance
Measurable results of an organization’s management of its
environmental aspects.
Environmental Performance Evaluation
Process to facilitate management decisions regarding an
organization’s environmental performance by:
1. selecting indicators,
2. collecting and analysing data,
3. assessing information about environmental performance,
4. reporting and communicating, and
5. periodically reviewing and improving this process

4. EPE
EPE is a tool to identify areas for improvement as well as providing
performance trends over time in order to understand, demonstrate
and improve performance using reliable key performance indicators.
EPE is a sub-theme of environmental management
Many organizations seek ways to understand, demonstrate and
improve their environmental performance.
This can be achieved by effectively managing those elements of their
activities, products and services that can significantly impact the
environment.

6. EPE vs Auditing
Environmental performance evaluation and environmental audits are
complementary tools that can be used to assess environmental
performance and identify areas for improvement.
The key aspects (and differences) of these tools are the following:
• Audits are conducted periodically to verify conformity with
specifications and compliance with legal and other requirements;
• EPE is an ongoing process of collection and assessment of data and
information to provide a current evaluation of performance, as well as
performance trends over time;
• Environmental audits can be used to gather such data and information,
either as part of EPE, or as part of an EMS, to verify whether
objectives and targets are being met.

9. ISO 14031:2013
ISO 14031:2013 gives guidance
on the design and use of
environmental performance
evaluation (EPE) within an
organization.
It is applicable to all
organizations, regardless of type,
size, location and complexity.
ISO 14031:2013 does not
establish environmental
performance levels.

11. 4.1.2.1 Indicators for EPE
The focus of ISO 14031 is the definition and
detailed discussion of the basic types of
indicator that may be used to determine and
evaluate environmental performance and
thereby support environmental management.
• Environmental condition indicators (ECIs)
• Environmental performance indicators
(EPIs)
– Management performance indicators
(MPIs)
– Operational performance indicators
(OPIs)

12. 4.1.2.1 Indicators for EPE
Environmental Condition
Indicators (ECIs)
• provide information about the
local, regional, national or
global condition of the
environment.
• Often difficult to link directly to the
organizations activities unless the
organization is the sole source.
• Used for creating baselines,
monitor trends, establish
permit limits, create incentives.

13. 4.1.2.1 Indicators for EPE
Environmental performance
indicators (EPI)
provide information about an
organization’s significant
environmental aspects and
environmental performance.

influence the organization’s
environmental performance

18. 4.1.2.2 Relating Indicators
Management Performance
Indicators (MPIs)
MPls can show improvements in
the social dimension
e.g. Indicators that show how
training Is being done or will be
done so as to improve certain
environmental aspects
MPls can show improvements in
the economic dimension
e.g. Investments on new
technologies so as to address
environmental aspects and cost
savings due to Improved
environmental performance

indicators (OPIs)
OPIs can show improvements in
the environment
– e.g. emissions reductions,
water use reductions,
hazardous waste
elimination

23. Case Study
A case study application of EPE was undertaken at a dairy
owned by Mother Dairy Fruit and Vegetable Ltd. of New Delhi,
India in December 2001.
The dairy had implemented an environmental management
system and obtained certification to ISO 14001.
Facility management was interested in enhancing their existing
management system by establishing an environmental
performance evaluation and improvement program, and
benchmarking its performance.
ENGI 9626

23
24. Case Study
The implementation of EPE at Mother Diary was initiated by
consulting with facility management about their objectives, and a
comprehensive review of the facility’s management systems and
operations.
During the review it was found the dairy was already monitoring
liquid fuel and electrical power consumption together with the
volume of wastewater processed in the effluent treatment
system.
All parameters were normalized using the volume of milk
processed.
ENGI 9626
Environmental Management System
24
26. Case Study
Since performance monitoring began five years ago, the dairy has
realized significant increases in the amount of milk processed per unit
of electrical power (23%) and diesel fuel (38%) consumed, and
reductions in the amount of wastewater generated (20%).
In addition to these indicators, the following environmental aspects
were identified as priorities for performance measurement:
• Groundwater conservation and reliability of well water supply;
• Water use conservation;
• Cost and efficiency of wastewater treatment;
• Employee training and awareness; and
• Green horticulture activities (planting gardens and composting bio-
sludge).

27. Reporting and Communicating
The results may be communicated as reports or
statements published on a regular basis.
• A description of the organization’s activities,
products and services;
• A statement of the organization’s
commitment to EPE as a tool for
environmental
• management;
• A statement of its significant environmental
aspects and related performance
• indicators;
• A comparison of performance indicators to
established criteria and targets;
• Trends in the organization’s environmental
performance;
• Legislative and regulatory compliance;
• Cost savings and financial results;
• Opportunities or recommendations to
improve environmental performance; and
• Actions arising from EPE.
