2. Transition Timeline
• The ISO 14001:2015 standard was published on 15th September
2015
• Three-year transition timetable
• From 14th September 2018, ISO 14001:2004 certificates will cease
to be valid.
• In the intervening period, organisations can continue to be certified
to the 2004 version of the standard, which will help those not yet
ready for the transition.
• However, any organisation wishing to be certified to ISO 14001
beyond September 2018 must by then meet the requirements of
ISO 14001:2015.

3. Why ISO 14001 was changed
Usually standards are reviewed every five years to make sure they stay
relevant.
In 2011, the ISO Technical Committee agreed that ISO14001 should be
revised.
Technology and business practices have changed significantly since its
last major revision.

4. Why ISO 14001 was changed
1. In today’s world, environmental management systems have to be part of a
sustainability and social responsibility policy.
2. Increase involvement of the leadership team
3. Ensure environmental management is aligned with the strategic direction of
the organization
4. Improve environmental performance
5. Improve risk and opportunity management ensuring continual improvement
is systematic
6. Improve lifecycle management to help identify specific product

7. Improve compliance with legislation, reducing the risk of fines and adverse
publicity
8. Provide more details
9. Introduce an integrated approach with other management system standards

6. Why ISO 14001 was changed
Most organizations have more than one
management system standard to
implement and certify.
Doing this individually takes up a lot of
extra time and resources, so there is a
clear need to find a way of integrating and
combining the standards in the best
possible way.
The management system standards to
date each presents different structures,
requirements and terminology, so
integration remains challenging.
In order to address this problem, ISO
developed Annex SL – the framework for
a generic management system and the
blueprint for all new and revised
management system standards going
forward.
ENGI 9626
Environmental Management System

7. Why ISO 14001 was changed
This high level structure will be rolled
out across all new and revised
management system standards to
ensure consistency and compatibility.
With Annex SL in place,
management system implementers
can look forward to less conflicts,
duplication, confusion and the
misunderstandings that took place as
a result of different management
system standard structures.
Management system auditors will
now use a core set of generic
requirements across disciplines and
industry sectors.

8. Why ISO 14001 was changed
ISO 14001:2015 is based on
Annex SL – the new high level
structure that brings a common
framework to all management
systems.

12. Additions
To address industry specific needs,
additional requirements for individual
sectors will be added to this generic
framework.
Whilst the high level structure cannot be
changed, sub-clauses and discipline-
specific text can be added.

26. The Key Changes
The first significant change is
Clause 4: Context of the
organization.
This is an entirely new clause that
brings a better and more strategic
understanding of all the factors
affecting the way organizations
manage their environmental
responsibilities.
Some examples are the climate,
resource availability and social,
regulatory, financial and
technology changes. ENGI 9626

30. The Key Changes
Clause 5, Leadership, has been
enhanced to ensure more
commitment, responsiveness, active
support and feedback from the
organization’s top management.
Their buy-in is critical for the success
of the environmental management
system, so they will be directly or
indirectly tasked with specific
responsibilities.
These changes will help to raise the
profile of an environmental
management system, making sure
top management looks at it from a
strategic, tactical or operational level.

“the protection of the environment, including
prevention of pollution and other specific

39. The Key Changes
Although the requirements of
Clause 7, Support, have not
changed, they are more
prescriptive to encourage
consistency across the
organization.
One example is communication
requirements. These have now
been revised to make all
communication more transparent,
appropriate, credible and reliable.
The clause separates internal and
external communication and
requires more detail when
reporting externally.

Clause 7.1 begins with a requirement that
organizations shall determine and provide the
necessary resources to establish, implement,
maintain and continually improve the EMS.
In Clause 7.5 there are the requirements for
‘documented information’ which is a new term
that replaces the references in the 2004
standard to ‘documents’ and ‘records’.
These requirements relate to the creation and
updating of documented information and their
control.

42. The Key Changes
Clause 8, Operations, now
places greater emphasis on the
concept of the ‘value chain’ that
impacts the environmental
management system.
New broader requirement to
consider certain operational
aspects ‘consistent with a life
cycle perspective’.
It also looks at how organizations
control changes and outsource
specific processes.

44. The Key Changes
Clause 9, Performance
evaluation, is a new clause that
has pulled together a number of
existing clauses from the current
version including monitoring and
measurement and management
review.
This will help companies to gather
the right records and prove that
their environmental management
system meets their business
objectives.

There is now more detailed
requirements in sub clause 9.1.2,
around the evaluation of compliance,
especially the requirement to maintain
‘knowledge and understanding of its
status of conforming with compliance
obligations’.

49. The Key Changes
A more structured approach has
been suggested for Clause 10,
Improvement.
Although it retains the principle of
the current non-conformity and
corrective action clause, the new
standard is more detailed in its
consideration of non-conformity
and resulting action needed.
