When museums like the Rijksmuseum, theGetty Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and now The Met provide free and open access to their digitised collections, it is not just to support a noble cause. It is because they understand and work with the realities of the Internet: If it’s difficult and/or expensive to get images of artworks from museums, people look for them elsewhere.
