Quarzwerke GmbH promotes biodiversity in its renatured forest by implementing a changed forestry concept, providing bat habitats, and creating woodlands and tunnels for amphibians. The mining area supports over 600 pioneer species and protects old forest wildlife.
Imerys Refractory Minerals is enhancing its rehabilitation practices to foster the settlement of an endangered bird, the Rainbow Bird, which nests in the company's operating quarries. The company is working with a local association to monitor the bird and define good practices.
Sibelco developed a Natural Capital approach and toolkit to counterbalance mining impacts and create opportunities for nature. It is applying this at reference sites and launched programs to protect pioneer species

LAST Conference - The Mickey Mouse model of leadership for software delivery ...Nish Mahanty
Leading an agile team can be rewarding and also challenging. It is an opportunity to apply your leadership and vision, and to introduce those the ideas and behaviours that are important to you. One of the main benefits is the opportunity to grow and develop the careers of your teams, and to have an impact wider than your own individual technical skills.
It is also a challenge. Often the skills that got you the promotion, or new job, aren't the ones you need to be successful in the new role. If you are inheriting an existing team, they usually have work in-flight so it’s important to be up to speed with what the team is doing, and whether they are on track for meeting their (now your) objectives. Every team, company, and situation is different, with unique challenges so it is important that you quickly identify where to focus your energies.
I'll outline a framework (with themes and a checklist) for assessing the situation, and constructing a 30 day plan to set yourself, and the team, up for success:
Theme 1: Build the things right (The technical aspects of delivering quality solutions)
Theme 2. Build the right thing (validating the planned deliverables against the desired business outcomes)
Theme 3. Build the right Team (building a resilient, highly engaged, highly skilled team, who work well together and who can efficiently adjust to unforseen changes, whilst still delivering the outcomes)
I believe that a successful agile team achieves a conscious balance between these themes. If they aren't focussed on all three, then they are unlikely to be as successful as they could be.
Against these three themes I'll present and discuss a 6 point checklist that will help the new leader develop a 30 day plan:
1. Business objectives and environment – assess whether the team is doing productive work that aligns with the business needs.
2. Team – build a highly engaged, resilient team that understand their contribution to the larger business outcomes
3. Metrics –continually visualise progress against your goals
4. Stakeholders – build a strong relationship, and clear lines of communication
5. Continual improvement – no team should stand still and no team has reached perfection, so continuously analyse performance and focus on getting better.
6. Budget – understand the financial commitment to help plan activities and team dynamics
The aim of the talk is to be educational, offering up a set of ideas, supported with real-world examples, that the attendees can adopt in their own organisations, to help them and their teams become more successful.

The main goal of this project is the establishment, within the restoration work, of a natural ecosystem by creating different habitats underrepresented in the vicinity of the Ivonne quarry. This will enhance the coexistence of a high level biodiversity of fauna and flora which will be able to maintain or even increase the population of a large group of species. Some of these species are under degree of threat worldwide or are endemic in the region.
The project won the 1st Prize in National Quarry Life Award in 2012 in Spain.

Globally, bats are facing wide-ranging threats that are causing the decline in the populations of several species in Europe. Some of these global threats are habitat degradation, disturbances in breeding places or hibernaculums and loss of roosting sites. We will take advantage of some properties of La Medina quarry (and most of quarries) to achieve our main goal: to increase the potential benefit of La Medina quarry for the bat populations inhabiting the surrounding area or inside the quarry.
We propose certain actions and guidelines to achieve all of our goals in order to benefit not only bats but also the environment, the company and society. Some of these actions are:
A methodology to identify evidence of bat species located at La Medina quarry.
A GIS and fieldwork based methodology to study the connectivity between La Medina and Las Caldas Cave, a Nature Reserve dedicated to bats.
A protocol for bat population management in quarries, in order to reconcile bats conservation with production and restoration in the quarry.
Interpretive kiosks, guided walks and other activities to spread the project among different local actors increasing people's knowledge and awareness and improving the corporate image of the company.
The results of the project could provide HeidelbergCement Group with tools enough to minimize disturbances to bats, to contribute to their conservation and to strengthen their populations in many quarries along the world.

many rare and endangered plant and animal species, creating a
habitat for old-forest species takes many decades. It is a highly
complex process requiring a special strategy.
In 2014 Quarzwerke signed a partnership with the forestry office,
resulting in:
- A changed forestry concept
- Provision of maternity roosts & winter boxes for bats on trees
- Construction of a bats winter cave
- Creation of woodland for amphibians in 2012
- Building of an amphibian tunnel
The recultivated mining area not only provides a habitat for over
600 pioneer species; it protects old forest wildlife too.

future kaolin and silica sand quarry area in the South East of
France. Ophrys drumana, a protected species, grows in
calcareous grasslands, near forest edges and is endangered
by increasing forest development. Sibelco France proposed
compensation measures and acquired “les pelouses de tête

Ophrys drumana. Sibelco reopened the landscape by cutting
bushes manually and uses horse grazing to maintain it open.
After 4 years, local flora showed a fourfold increase in the
Ophrys drumana population, a total count of 22 different
orchids with the introduction of 5 new orchid species.

Creating a substitution area for Silene portensis
The quarries of Bédoin are silica sand quarries close to the
Mont Ventoux, South East France. They are located next to a
ZNIEFF protected area for fauna and flora. Silene portensis, a
very rare and regional protected species is found in the area. It
grows on acidic sandy grounds and disappears when the
vegetation becomes denser.
In 2004, an inventory was conducted as part of a study to
expand the quarry. A hot spot of Silene portensis was found
that would be jeopardized by the expansion. Sibelco France
took substitution measures to create a sandy area of 300m² to
allow the reintegration of Silene portensis. The Silene
portensis plants were relocated and the seeds were collected
and planted manually in 2005. End 2009, the population in the
new sandy area show an important increase: more than 150
plants compared to 10 plants in 2002.
14. Since 2009, Sibelco Deutschland is actively supporting
amphibians in its clay and kaolin operations. In Oedingen,
their habitat has been optimised and extended by creating
ponds and keeping the area open. The company works closely
together with specialists and authorities.
Since 2012 Oedingen is part of the project “Restoring and
linking of yellow-bellied toad populations in Germany”. The
positive developments led Oedingen to become a source
habitat for the repopulation of other areas. During the
reproduction period eggs from ponds with low water levels
are collected and reared ex situ. Later the larvae are
returned to areas (within the former natural distribution
area), that are suitable for Yellow bellied toads but currently

16. Sibelco Spain has developed a Biodiversity Management Plan
in the quarry of “Arcos de la Frontera”. The plan is a
guidance tool for the ecological balance in the quarry area. It
covers the different life stages of the quarry: areas where
extraction takes place, areas in the process of being restored,
and restored areas. The management of exotic species (Acacia
farnesiana) and specific actions to ensure the survival of some
species (Bee-eater, Cork oak) are also covered.
The quarry of Arcos is creating several lagoons in the area
that function as an important connectivity between larger
water bodies in the surroundings. In the short term, the
lagoons can become important resting or foraging areas for
migratory animals (birds and mammals). In the long term,
these lagoons will upgrade the structural ecological
connectivity of the land, because the lagoons will form an
important stepping stone between larger water bodies.

ecological experts. This project is the first of its kind in the
Swedish Mining Industry regulating protection and conservation
