Lessons for Aquatic Protected Areas from Marine and Freshwater Experiences
Marine protected areas (MPAs) and freshwater protected areas (FPAs) share many commonalities in their design, establishment and management, suggesting great potential for sharing lessons learned. However, surprisingly little has been exchanged to date, and both realms of inquiry and practice have progressed mostly independent of each other. Both MPAs and FPAs, collectively Aquatic Protected Areas (APAs), are frequently used as community fisheries management tools to support the sustainability of small-scale fisheries. In a transdisciplinary effort to explore crossover lessons between marine and freshwater realms, a team of researchers synthesized case studies of four MPAs and five FPAs (or clusters of FPAs) from nine countries, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Chile, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Lao PDR, Thailand, and the United States. This presentation explores similarities, differences, and transferable lessons between MPAs and FPAs under five themes: 1) ecological system; 2) establishment approaches; 3) effectiveness monitoring; 4) sustaining APAs; and 5) challenges and external threats. In particular, the findings indicate many similarities around the human dimension of both MPA and FPA establishment and management, which highlight clear opportunities for exchanging lessons related to stakeholder engagement and community support. Additionally, similar socioeconomic and governance assessment methods could be used to address gaps in effectiveness data in both realms. Continued exchange between MPAs and FPAs, as well as increased transdisciplinary collaboration would benefit both realms, and practitioners could work together to address shared challenges, such as developing mechanisms for diversified and sustained funding, and employing integrated coastal/watershed management to address system-level threats.

The GoAL WaSH programme, managed by the Stockholm International Water Institute, supports improved water governance to achieve sustainable and equitable water management. It does this by setting stakeholder priorities and visions, supporting development of plans and policies, and strengthening governance capacity. To date, most of GoAL WaSH's work has focused on preparing for change through activities like developing water strategies. It is now shifting focus to supporting policy implementation through decentralization efforts, tariff setting, and capacity building at the local level.

The country of Tuvalu faces many water challenges due to its small size and isolation. An IWRM project introduced waterless compost toilets to reduce water usage, pollution, and improve sanitation. Through community engagement activities, 40 toilets were successfully installed. This reduced sewage and groundwater pollution while increasing access to improved sanitation. The project helped change attitudes and led to a national water policy.

The GoAL WaSH programme, managed by the Stockholm International Water Institute, supports improved water governance to achieve sustainable and equitable water management. It does this by setting stakeholder priorities and visions, supporting development of plans and policies, and strengthening governance capacity. To date, most of GoAL WaSH's work has focused on preparing for change through activities like developing water strategies. It is now shifting focus to supporting policy implementation through decentralization efforts, tariff setting, and capacity building at the local level.

The country of Tuvalu faces many water challenges due to its small size and isolation. An IWRM project introduced waterless compost toilets to reduce water usage, pollution, and improve sanitation. Through community engagement activities, 40 toilets were successfully installed. This reduced sewage and groundwater pollution while increasing access to improved sanitation. The project helped change attitudes and led to a national water policy.

Project-based learning (PBL) involves students designing, developing, and constructing hands-on solutions to a problem. The educational value of PBL is that it aims to build students’ creative capacity to work through difficult or ill-structured problems, commonly in small teams. Typically, PBL takes students through the following phases or steps:
Identifying a problem
Agreeing on or devising a solution and potential solution path to the problem (i.e., how to achieve the solution)
Designing and developing a prototype of the solution
Refining the solution based on feedback from experts, instructors, and/or peers
Depending on the goals of the instructor, the size and scope of the project can vary greatly. Students may complete the four phases listed above over the course of many weeks, or even several times within a single class period.
Because of its focus on creativity and collaboration, PBL is enhanced when students experience opportunities to work across disciplines, employ technologies to make communication and product realization more efficient, or to design solutions to real-world problems posed by outside organizations or corporations. Projects do not need to be highly complex for students to benefit from PBL techniques. Often times, quick and simple projects are enough to provide students with valuable opportunities to make connections across content and practice. Implementing Project-Based Learning
As a pedagogical approach, PBL entails several key processes: (1) defining problems in terms of given constraints or challenges, (2) generating multiple ideas to solve a given problem, (3) prototyping — often in rapid iteration — potential solutions to a problem, and (4) testing the developed solution products or services in a “live” or authentic setting.
Defining the Problem
PBL projects should start with students asking questions about a problem. What is the nature of problem they are trying to solve? What assumptions can they make about why the problem exists? Asking such questions will help students frame the problem in an appropriate context. If students are working on a real-world problem, it is important to consider how an end user will benefit from a solution.
Generating Ideas
Next, students should be given the opportunity to brainstorm and discuss their ideas for solving the problem. The emphasis here is not to generate necessarily good ideas, but to generate many ideas. As such, brainstorming should encourage students to think wildly, but to stay focused on the problem. Setting guidelines for brainstorming sessions, such as giving everyone a chance to voice an idea, suspending judgement of others’ ideas, and building on the ideas of others will help make brainstorming a productive and generative exercise.

Designing and prototyping a solution are typically the next phase of the PBL process.

The objectives of the meeting were to discuss best practices for conjunctive management of surface and groundwater resources in Africa and strengthen cooperation between organizations. It provides background information on the participating organizations, including UNESCO, GEF, NEPAD Water CoE, and an overview of their work related to integrated water resources management. A list of the 35 participants from the different organizations is also included.
Glaas 2017-report
The GLAAS 2017 report analyzes financing for universal access to water, sanitation and hygiene under the Sustainable Development Goals. It finds that current financing is insufficient and that a large financing gap exists. Data availability for decision-making is limited. National assessments are needed to better estimate financial needs. Few countries have developed comprehensive financial plans, and government budgets for water and sanitation remain low in most countries. Increased financing from all sources will be required to achieve universal access by 2030.

Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation data
Genetic diversity within and among populations is essential for species persistence. While targets and indicators for genetic diversity are captured in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing genetic diversity across many species at national and regional scales remains challenging. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) need accessible tools for reliable and efficient monitoring at relevant scales. Here, we describe how Earth Observation satellites (EO) make essential contributions to enable, accelerate, and improve genetic diversity monitoring and preservation. Specifically, we introduce a workflow integrating EO into existing genetic diversity monitoring strategies and present a set of examples where EO data is or can be integrated to improve assessment, monitoring, and conservation. We describe how available EO data can be integrated in innovative ways to support calculation of the genetic diversity indicators of the GBF monitoring framework and to inform management and monitoring decisions, especially in areas with limited research infrastructure or access. We also describe novel, integrative approaches to improve the indicators that can be implemented with the coming generation of EO data, and new capabilities that will provide unprecedented detail to characterize the changes to Earth’s surface and their implications for biodiversity, on a global scale.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

The modification of an existing product or the formulation of a new product to fill a newly identified market niche or customer need are both examples of product development. This study generally developed and conducted the formulation of aramang baked products enriched with malunggay conducted by the researchers. Specifically, it answered the acceptability level in terms of taste, texture, flavor, odor, and color also the overall acceptability of enriched aramang baked products. The study used the frequency distribution for evaluators to determine the acceptability of enriched aramang baked products enriched with malunggay. As per sensory evaluation conducted by the researchers, it was proven that aramang baked products enriched with malunggay was acceptable in terms of Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color, and Texture. Based on the results of sensory evaluation of enriched aramang baked products proven that three (3) treatments were all highly acceptable in terms of variable Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color and Textures conducted by the researchers.

Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.
