IABC Rapido is a ‘pecha kucha’-style presentation session - five minutes and twenty slides.
This one looks at Magna Carta, Jyske Lov - and how we're bring the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) into the 21st century.

The 1200s were tumultuous years:
Ghenghis Khan wreaked havoc from the West
4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Crusade wreaked havoc from the East
A couple points of light:
And in 1215 at Runnymede the Magna Carta was forced upon and later rejected by King John
…and as we shall shortly see – 1241

Now what has that got to do with ethics you might ask - well, in a time of change, whether the 1200s or today, we tend to turn to guidance that is independent of time - to help guide us through complex decisions.
In other words, the Magna Carta is perceived as having a certain ethic to it.
It transcends time. As does Jyske Lov. Unlike Magna Carta, it was written in plain language and thus more accessible.

Jyske Lov – aka Codex Holmiensis – introduced by King Valdemar Sejr in 1241:
“With law shall the country be built and if all men were content with what is theirs and let others enjoy the same right, there would be no need for a law. But no law is as good as the truth, but if one wonders what the truth is, then shall the law show the truth. If the land had no law, then he would have the most who could grab the most by force.” ”
“The law must be honest, just, reasonable and according to the ways of the people. It must meet their needs and speak plainly, so that all men may know and understand, what the law is. It is not to be made in any man's favor, but for the needs of all them who live in the land. No man shall judge contrary to the law, which the king has given and the country chosen. [...] neither shall he [the king] take it back without the will of the people.”

It still resonates today – as illustrated with this picture from Wikipedia of the City Court of Copenhagen – and importantly, this still stands as a principle:
"It is not to be made in any man's favor, but for the needs of all them who live in the land. No man shall judge contrary to the law, which the king has given and the country chosen. [...] neither shall he [the king] take it back without the will of the people.”

So why are these documents timeless? Because the call for consistency in how we act.

At the simplest level it is about matching what you say with what you do – and basing both on a shared framework.

Why? Because if you don’t, things can shift fast.
One of Valdemar Sejr’s successors – Erik Klipping - saw this first hand when he was killed by a band of men – stabbed 56 times no less.
The 1200s were indeed tumultuous times.

How can you make sure your time isn’t tumultuous? Understand the context you’re operating in.

So, how do you see the wood for the trees – and the trees for the wood?

Be clear about the levers – preferably the top three…

Be clear about where your stakeholders are at – in terms of power and interest – and adjust accordingly.

Because if you don’t, things can shift fast – yet for it to work, you do need to have those clear timeless guiding principles in place.

That way you can really forge a path through the forest.

To paraphrase:
“The strategy must be honest, just, reasonable and according to the ways of the people. It must meet their needs and speak plainly, so that all may know and understand, what the strategy is.

Because when the rubber hits the road – whether tarmac of forest track – you’d better make sure enthusiasm, resource and ability are aligned.

What’s the best way to do this? Engage with all four corners of your stakeholder map.
Engage, engage, engage – grounding the effort in clear guidance: clarity of role, purpose and mission of each group.

Relentlessly involve your stakeholders – this is how the IABC Global Standard was developed – how we developed #IABC1417 – and this is how we’re doing a root and branch review of IABC’s policies and procedures right now. Making IABC ready for its next 45 years.

So from 1215 to #Eurocomm to #IABC15 – we’ve turned to Global Standards as a society and as an organization. At IABC, we’re setting it for the profession – and this year you can test against it through our new Communications Certification Programme.
Also, behind the scenes we’re bringing how we’re doing the same to help IABC fulfill its purpose as a 21st century association – whether working with the International Standards Organization for our certification or adopting good practice operationally for how we manage, run and improve IABC: for our members, for the profession – and for our staff.
