In May our focus will be Geometry. We will be studying chapter 11 (11-1, 11-2) and
chapter 13 (13-1, 13-3, and 13-5). Since these chapters are so short I will be assessing
the kids by taking a quiz instead of a test. Even though the 5th
grade doesn’t have to
Introduce chapters 12 & 14 I will be reviewing chapter 12 (Angles) and 14 (Three-
Dimensional Shapes) with kids so they have an understanding of these concepts.
These will help prepare your child to finish the year strong. These will help with
preparing your child for the NWEA also. Also please practice on Khan academy.

Science
As we conclude our unit, your child will be working in a team to build a model of
a roller coaster. In their investigation students will design, demonstrate, and
explain the different forces involved in the motion of the marble up and down the
track of the roller coaster.
A study guide went home on April 22nd
to help students prepare for a
final assessment over this unit. The unit test is scheduled for Wednesday, May
13th
. This will be the only science test of the 4th
quarter. Please remind your
child to study each night prior to the test.
Students have begun their final science unit entitled, Systems and Survival.
They will be introduced to plant and animal classification and explore how scientists
classify organisms. Students will discover that there are organisms that are not
classified as either plant or animal (fungi, monerans, and protists).
In addition, they will study the physical and behavioral characteristics that
help organisms survive in their different environments. They will discover that
physical and behavioral traits can be inherited genetically or acquired through
learned behavior. Also, students will investigate how fossils provide evidence about
the nature of ancient life.
Finally, students will explore the interaction of specific body systems and
how they function.
Language Arts
Students will write continue to write their persuasive essay.
They will use precise facts and details and convincing language to
support their point of view. Then students will complete a rough
draft, which they will revise and edit.
In word study students will continue to focus on Greek and Latin
roots.
Reading
Students will be exploring the genre, science fiction. They will begin
reading their sci-fi literature book this month. Students are responsible for
their assigned reading and it is important students stay current so they are
able to participate in group discussions. Students will be completing various
vocabulary, comprehension, and literary activities.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies we are learning about the American Revolution.
We will learn about the struggles the American colonists had to gain
independence from Britain. We will also learn how the British
government sought to gain greater control over the colonies, how the
colonists responded to British controls, and how the resulting tensions
between Britain and the 13 colonies exploded into revolution and war.
We will be completing a Gameboard Project that will be completed in
class and at home. The project will be due on Friday, May 8th
.

  • 2. MATH In May our focus will be Geometry. We will be studying chapter 11 (11-1, 11-2) and chapter 13 (13-1, 13-3, and 13-5). Since these chapters are so short I will be assessing the kids by taking a quiz instead of a test. Even though the 5th grade doesn’t have to Introduce chapters 12 & 14 I will be reviewing chapter 12 (Angles) and 14 (Three- Dimensional Shapes) with kids so they have an understanding of these concepts. These will help prepare your child to finish the year strong. These will help with preparing your child for the NWEA also. Also please practice on Khan academy. In their investigation students will design, demonstrate, and explain the different forces involved in the motion of the marble up and down the track of the roller coaster. A study guide went home on April 22nd to help students prepare for a final assessment over this unit. The unit test is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13th . This will be the only science test of the 4th quarter. Please remind your child to study each night prior to the test. Students have begun their final science unit entitled, Systems and Survival. They will be introduced to plant and animal classification and explore how scientists classify organisms. Students will discover that there are organisms that are not classified as either plant or animal (fungi, monerans, and protists). In addition, they will study the physical and behavioral characteristics that help organisms survive in their different environments. They will discover that physical and behavioral traits can be inherited genetically or acquired through learned behavior. Also, students will investigate how fossils provide evidence about the nature of ancient life. Finally, students will explore the interaction of specific body systems and how they function.
  • 3. Language Arts Students will write continue to write their persuasive essay. They will use precise facts and details and convincing language to support their point of view. Then students will complete a rough draft, which they will revise and edit. In word study students will continue to focus on Greek and Latin roots. Reading Students will be exploring the genre, science fiction. They will begin reading their sci-fi literature book this month. Students are responsible for their assigned reading and it is important students stay current so they are able to participate in group discussions. Students will be completing various vocabulary, comprehension, and literary activities. SOCIAL STUDIES In Social Studies we are learning about the American Revolution. We will learn about the struggles the American colonists had to gain independence from Britain. We will also learn how the British government sought to gain greater control over the colonies, how the colonists responded to British controls, and how the resulting tensions between Britain and the 13 colonies exploded into revolution and war. We will be completing a Gameboard Project that will be completed in class and at home. The project will be due on Friday, May 8th .
